  1. i have a vhs tape i transvered to avi to get best quality.if i make it into a mpg2 file will the quality be better than if i just did it as an mpg2 file in the first place.it just i want to get rid of the blocking effect and maybe use a filter of some sort.the film is in black and white

  2. The general rule of thumb is to capture in the highest resolution and bitrate you system can support to uncompressed avi video (or with a 'lostless codec' like huffyuv'). Edit as necessary. Then encoded to a a lower resolution/bitrate as/if needed.

    Generally speaking capturing directly to MPEG2 does not give as good quaility as capturing uncompressed then encoding with a good software encoder.

    However, IMHO most VHS source tapes are of such poor quaility that to save time I just capture to MPEG2 at 352x480 and author. The quaility is lost is not worth the extra hassle _IMHO_, YMMV.
