  1. I have a DVD9 that i want to make a backup of, but it has extras probably bigger than the movie itself

Is it possible to just decode the film only and leave everything else off then burn that movie?

im sure theres a guide, but i cant find one.
i dont need menus, only audio and visual.

    thanks

  2. You can decode the movie only. DVD2One will do it for you, as will DVDShrink. Shrink's a little more involved, but its free and kinda' fun to use, actually.

  3. Look to the left under DVD Rip, there are several guides on how to do this.

    I would recommend:

    1) Rip entire DVD to HD

    2) Load into IFOEdit, strip all unwanted VOB ids, audio tracks, subtitles, etc. If the generated VIDEO_TS folder is less than 4.7GB burn it as normal. If not...

    3) Use DVD shrink, DVD2one, IC, etc. to compress it.

If the main movie only is over 4.7gb and you want to back it up with the 'BEST' results, you should demux the m2v/ac3 files, re-encode with CCE or TMPGenc, re-author with the original ac3 file, burn.

A little 'over the top' for an apparent newbie, don't you think?

My suggestion is either use DVDshrink to take care of it especially if you dont need to reencode to make the movie fit. Or if it will not fit without reencoding and you want as high quality as possible with no menu try the guide thats in my sig. It will help you use CCE to reencode.

Personally I will allow DVDShrink to encode as long as it will fit with just level 1 compression, I'm fairly pickly but Shrinks Level 1 seems ok to me.

  6. I use SmartRipper to do exactly what you stated that you wanted to do. It will allow you to rip only the movie and nothing else. It also allows you to automatically demux the file during the rip process. Here is the guide that I use:

    http://www.dvd2dvdr.com/part_i_spruce.htm

This is a very simple guide as I am no expert and have followed it many times with success.

    Hope this helps.

    No offense, but...

I _hate_ it when people's answers to simple questions begin with "extract all the files and then run IFO Edit and..." and then proceed to have a bunch of stuff that NOBODY ever REALLY has to do, but is the "make a lot of work for yourself" way.

I couldn't agree with you more. There are a few members of this forum that are more into self-aggrandizement than being of real help -- they're the 'this is how I do it' type posters. Taking advantage of a simple little newbie question to do it, does more harm than good.

Actually, I always rip the entire disk, then just encode the movie, with DVD2SVCD. I wind up with maybe 7 gig of files, but have no prob converting the movie only. Someday, I may buy a DVD burner, and not have to re-rip, the files are there. Hell, the DVD itself might be unreadable by that time, so ripping it now is a little bit of insurance.
'Course, I have a couple 160s, a 120, a 100, a 60, and a 45 in my main machine, so a gig here and there doesn't bother me. Before you ask, I have an ATA133 card in the machine to handle the excess of drives. But I do have a good bit of the alphabet used up, single letter. Another card, more drives, will have to go to AA, BB, CC, etc. I'm gettin' lost, here.

    Edit:
I may have misthought, here. mybigtoe is asking about DVD to DVDR, not my field, so vejita-sam may have something. Excuse me all to hell. If I knew how to remove an answer, I'd do it here. Is it still germane? Can he do this?

  10. Hard drive space isnt a problem for me, i have 240 gigs on this machine and and another 240 on other computers on my network.

but thanks to those that have posted, i'll go through the tutorials to make sure that they're the ones i want, i'll try them out and then probably come back needing to ask a crap load of other questions cos i buggered this up.
