  1. What is a easy way to trim a movie when the part you want to trim/take out is in the middle? All the programs that i see will only take out parts at the beginning of a movie or at the end. For example.

The movie i have is 2 hours long in the middle of the movie (an hour into to it) is a spot i want to take out that is only a 20 sec. It's a MPEG-2 movie.

  2. The easiest way would be to use an editor that allows you to split the movie into to clips. Split the movie just before the section you want to remove and then trim the beginning of the second clip. I do this with Windows Movie Maker 2.

I would use TMPGenc's Mpeg Tools.

Cut off the first half, up to the point you want to cut.

Cut off the second half, right after the section you want to cut.

    Join the two output files.

Doing it in discreet segments (rather than trying to delete a segment in the middle of one file) may also help to minimize audio sync problems that can come up with cutting mpeg-2 files.

  4. Thanks

I was thinking you could just cut out 20 sec in the middle of a movie.

Dazzle's Movie Star 5 allows you to edit clips in the middle. I recently captured some programs with commercials in them and was able to cut them out using Movie Star's timeline editor.

You can in a way with TMPGEnc

In the merge and cut tools open 2 copies of the same movie. In the first on cut off the end that you dont want in the second one cut off the beginning you dont want. Then save it to a new file, this in effect cuts the middle out of the movie in one process rather than making 2 cuts then joining after.

This is the way I did it beforeTMPGEnc allowed you to not encode the 20 second clip (you didn't want) in the middle.
Be warned though, it's proved to be unreliable when merging, joining etc. files not created with TMPGEnc.
Doesn't hurt to try, it sure is the simplist way

  8. ..Heres how I do it.

Load file into spruce Up (or any other DVD authoring software that allows you to add chapters)

Add chapter 1 at start of bit you want to edit, add chapter 2 at end. Then build DVD files (ie a Video TS folder), Run Smartripper, n choose Chapter 1 and chapter 3.

The finished result will be a file without chapter 2 (the bit you wanted to edit) and best of all the file will be ok n DVD legal.

Works fine for me, I use this method all the time to edit out adverts when i use my panasonic DMR E30 set top recorder.

Ulead DVD Movie Factory2 allows you to do this very easily. You can remove as many clips you like from a single avi file. All other editing tools I saw require you to copy the same movie multiple times and trim and append various portions, which is time consume and painful.

I think the scenario you described is very common and I expected most editors should allows this easily like Ulead DVD MF2 does but they don't.

  11. yeah i'm working with MPEG-2.

I tried using TMPGenc's Mpeg Tools but 100% of the time after i cut out part of a movie the audio would always be out of sync.

What i am doing is opening up the movie in TMPGenc's Mpeg Tools then i edit it by splitting the movie in two parts. Splitting it at the part i want to take out then i rejoin the 2 clips made by TMPGEnc if that makes sense. Every time i try it over the audio is out of sync. What am i doing wrong? This is a family video so there is not a lot of audio and places that i usally split it out there was no talking.

I tried to use this guide for TMPGEnc.

but i think it's outdated? I looked at some of the other guides (https://www.videohelp.com/edit) but most of the tools used you have to buy. M2-Edit looks great but the demo only lets you make a 5 min movie.

I tried this to https://www.videohelp.com/sync that works but it takes forever to get the audio right.

Out of sync audio/video is the side-effect I was talking about.

Might seem a simplistic question but what are you veiwing the joined files with?
Are you burning them and watching on your standalone dvd player, watching them with Windows Media Player or watching them with another software program?
