  1. The same ol question asked another time. Does anyone have the 17" powerbook, and if so, which DVD-R media works best, or I'm willing to go for what works most of the time. By the way, Im having a huge party tonight, I have to do something with all these coasters.

In my 12" Powerbook G4, I use "Improved 1X Standard White-Top General DVD-R 4.7 GB" Item number 702886 from www.americal.com and they cost about $1 per in quantities of 50 to 100.

I also use their DVD-RWs in my iMac G4, but Apple has changed the firmware on the UJ-815 in the 12" to not allow for DVD-RW. I have heard that they restored this capability in the 17"; is that true?

I have burned over 150 DVDs with maybe only 1 or 2 coasters...

I know we all want the day when you can pop in any old DVD-R(w) and have it work just like any old run of the mill blank CD.... but we are not there yet. Why not just use Apple DVD-R? Or Verbatim or Sony? For that I pay per disc for Apple DVD-R (and have them work flawlessly each and every time), it is sooooo worth it when I log in here day after day and read about how much cash you guys are wasting on DVD-Rs that don't work.

I second that. Using Apple Branded media in Apple products eliminates
a TON of headache, because you know Apple has done enough testing
to make sure the media works with their drives ( it's why they ship
Verbatim Data Life CD-Rs with their CD-R and Combo unit machines--
They tested it, they know what works, its their *subtle* reccomendation).

I have also tested Be/All Media from www.meritline.com.
Works excellent in the 17" TiBook for Data Backups.
Works fine also at 4.2 GB backup DVD copies made from Toast
    Titaninum 5.21.

Send me $150.00 and I will send you 50 of the americal DVD-Rs, but I will write the name "Apple" on each one first...

My original point was why take a chance? It's early days with these DVD-Rs!

I've used a few different brands and only had trouble a Sony. I mostly use the cheapest ones from Supermediastore.com. They work just fine for me.

  9. Well I have a 17" PB, I've only tried using Fujifilm silver CD-R 4.7 discs and I've only burnt two playable discs versus 7 coasters!

Burnt everything using Toast, no clue why some work and others don't, I got different errors too, like "HARDWARE ERROR 0x03,0x01" and "ILLEGAL REQUEST 0x30, 0x05 CANNOT WRITE MEDIUM - INCOMPATIBLE FORMAT"

Off to try some of the media suggested here...
