  1. Anybody know what this is, or what's causing this image playback problem in Apple DVD Player? It's happenging on both burned and original DVD's, but doesn't effect the burn itself. The burned disks play fine on my external DVD player. I'm using a new dvr-105 pioneer superdrive that shipped with the unit a couple of months ago. My only guess is that I might need to clean the drive with some kind of optical cleaner.

  2. I suspect by cleaning your drive the problem will not go away...

Both backups and originals show the same problem. Your standalone player plays them well. A couple of moths old. If I were you I would check my drive...

AppleCare always pays for itself with the first hardware breakdown. Here it maybe software, but at least it is Apple's software.

If you don't have it, you still have the 1yr warranty; altho the 90 day warranty may be up...

You should call Apple and see what their techs say. I think the number is still 800-SOS-APPL.

    Report your results.

NOTE: if you did not pay for your Mac, but obtained it through a hardware wrapper on a peer-to-peer network, you should not call Apple. Even though some people feel that hardware distribution over the Internet is "fair use", Apple apparently does not agree...

  4. I'm not convinced it's actually a hardware issue now. I did my first reboot this morning after posting this late last night and the problem seemed to be gone completely. DVD's, both burned and originals played fine. However the disk that this problem started with was the uncut version of "Caligula". I popped it in this afternoon again and the same problem started and would only clear upon reboot. I was also initially having a "Decryption Problem" when attempting to use DVDBackup that read:

"Failed to decrypt video title set 1. Skip it and continue, or stop processing".

Looking through other threads below I've seen this problem come up for some other people, but nothing like what I've shown above seemed to accompany the error.

I haven't tried all the methods suggested on those threads, but I do have a scratch repair device that I thought would take care of most of those concerns like cleaning up fingerprints, scratches etc. I also read that it would take many fixes for that to work. So I think i can narrow this down to a either a bad disk or a disk that has encryption that seems to mess with Apple Player.

Any other input for fixing the disks or correction to what I've said would be helpful.

  5. The exact same thing happens to me. It's not your drive. I think it may be scratches on the disk that cause some errors that DVD player cannot recover from. The artifacts appear at the same point in the movie each time. The only solution is to skip past the chapter with the gitch and rewind until just after that point in the movie. You will miss a minute or two of the movie, but at least you can continue watching the rest of the movie.

Out of the hundreds of movies I've watched on my HTMac, it's happened in about three. Oddly, you are correct that the image corruption persists until reboot. More than anything, I think it may be a problem with the way DVD player recovers from corrupt data from scratches. It usually happens with old scratched Netflix discs.

  6. Nick,

You hit the nail on the head. This was a Netflix DVD and your explanation jives with the rest of my experience. I've only encountered this problem with a few DVD's, and only this once on the apple player because I don't usually watch them on my computer, so I was a bit thrown. Strangely, I really couldn't see the scratches on the surface when I first looked, they must have been extremely small. Thanks to everyone for their feedback.
