  1. hello everyone,, I just purchased and installed a Sony DRU-510a. All is well except it will only play DVDs nothing else. It wont play Cds, music, software, nothing..except DVDs.

When I try to play anything other than a DVD , one of 2 things happens, the light comes on about 2-3 times and it just sits there as if to say its not readable, or worse it spins and spins until it crashes you can't eject it or stop it or ne thing

Can someone help, surely something that cost this much can play everything.....

    many thanks in advance

Well it should read everthing you mentioned. Installation issues? Did you install the drive on a IDE cable with another device on the same cable? Did you make one master (jumper setting) and the other one slave(jumper setting)? Or are the jumpers on CS (Cable select)? All this should be okay if its at least reading DVDs. However the Creative Soundblaster Auto Disk Detect feature sometimes has a way of not allowing new drives to detect media correctly. Do you have a soundblaster card installed? Let me know. I have the same DVD Drive.

Are you running Windows XP? Can you open up any of the songs or files on a CD by using windows explorer or browse function? Your auto detect feature could be corrupt. And lastly, have you installed all updates to you operating system? I have on occasion had this problem with my older HP 200i but not with my Sony DRU 500A and AX. Some folks might tell you to delete the secondary IDE in the device manager, reboot and let the Operating System find and reload the drivers. Hopefully someone else will post with another option.

  5. Hiya again,, Yep Im running XP Pro,,, and cant see anything at all in Windows Explorer, either the light comes on a couple of times when trying to read the Cd or it crashes completely,

The only updates are the usual windows updates that come through,,

Might give that a go, delete the secondary IDE and reboot and let windows see if it can plug n play... hmmm.. cant hurt to try that...

Far as drivers go, there were no drivers as such that came with the burner, ( Im assuming you mean the XP drivers already in Windows).....

there should have been a cable that connected from the burner to the MB for on board sound, but since thats disabled and I have the sound blaster card I didnt connect that, ( I figured it would do nothing since its disabled anyway).....

Do I need to connect this cable from burner to creative sound card, does this burner require that ( though it reads DVDs easy enough without this connected)........

    Thanks again for your help,

No the cable is not an issue. But connect it when you get a chance. Should have a CD and Auxillary plug on the card so both drives can be audio ready if software does not support audio extraction. The drive causing a crash is a concern. No there would not be any drivers required for the drive itself (Plug and Play). The firmware that came with the drive should be okay, but a firmware update is another trouble shooting step. Your mother boards chip set or so called 4-1 drivers could be causing this issue too. It would be nice if you could put the drive in another machine just to rule out the drive having any factory related problems. But you did say the drive plays DVD Movies fine? Just hangs and sometimes crashes when trying to read software/music CDs? Humm? Need to think more.

  7. Yes,, thats the thing, you think if it played DVD it would play the rest....
Firmware shouldnt be an issue either as its the 510a not the 500...... hmmm.......

Ill try to delete the secondary IDE later & reboot and see if that helps,,
