Slow DVD ripping speed with WinXP

My old PC had a Pioneer 10x DVD and it used to rip at upto 5x

Just got a new machine with a Samsung 16x, and it's not ripping above 2x I think DMA isn't enabled, but I can't find it anywhere !! using WinXP home edition, new to XP, so can anyone point me in the right direction ?

Well its like this! Make sure you have DMA enabled. In DEVICE MANAGER. Look at which channel that is connected to that drive. Delete that channel ( IDE ) in DEVICE MANAGER then Re-Boot. It will put it back yuor IDE the same as it was but LOOK! now you can rip at 5x+ now!!!

It has nothing to do with WinXP IMO. I bet your DVD drive is one that is locked at 2x like most DVD writers are. Just install a LiteON LTD163 or LTD166s DVD drive and you will rip at 8x (I get rips as high as 15x on DVD5 discs) and higher like my drives.

Sorry about this forgot to say as I use XP PRO. Go START, SETTINGS, CONTROL PANEL, SYSTEM, HARDWARE, DEVICE MANAGER. IDE ATA Controllers. Primary or Secondary IDE, Advance Settings. Hope this helps.

have a samsung dvd/cdr combo drive...i loaded the latest firmware off the samsung site..it turned out that it put the ripping speed down to 2x when before i was getting upto 12x..so i loaded an earlier firmware and got back my speed...this may help if you have enabled dma in your control panel........basser

Look in Start/Control Panel/System/Hardware/device manager/IDE ATA controllers/primary IDE controller and secondary IDE controller.

Well it looks like it is enabled

Can't believe I've got a much quicker PC (2.4Ghz P4 v's 850Mhz PIII), but I can't rip as quick

I had that same problem two days ago. Even though it is enabled Delete the IDE/ATA controllers and it will pick up your speed. Before I did it I was getting rip speeds of 2x if I was lucky now up to 12x. Dont be scared, just Delete them and restart your computer, they will automatically reinstall.

Deleted the Primary IDE controller, let Windows re-install it, rebooted again and voila

Just tried a DVD, and got the ripping speed upto 6.3x

Which is 3x better than before !! alot more acceptable !!

I just wanted to say THANK YOU to everybody. I just bought a Sony DRU-500ULX and the slow ripping was pissing me off. But fortunately, my computer had a built in 16 speed Pionner DVD player. I was only getting rip speeds of 2 too but after reading this posting, I can rip now around 10 speed (took me three tries to get it working though). Thank you Thank you Thank you!!

Now only if I can find the original firmware that came with my DVD burner. I stupidly upgraded my firmware to 2.0f and because of this, I can only burn certain 2 speed DVD media at 1 speed and each time I try to burn at 4 speed, I need to restart my computer... **sigh** But this is a different story.

Thats funny, I thought I had already told you about deleting IDE Channel and re-booting.

Had the same problem with my A04. However I noticed this while burning (I never use the A04 for ripping, I use my DVD-ROM for that).
The processor load was way too high.
When I deleted the IDE channels, it did switch back to UDMA, but as soon as I tried burning again, it went back to PIO.
You can see it happening in eventviewer (system). You will get errors 9 and 11, and after 6 of these errors, XP switches back to PIO.

I decided I could not bear this problem any longer (could do nothing with my PC while burning) and bought a Promise IDE PCI controller, and now it works fine.

I think the cause of this is the louzy VIA chipset on my Abit KT7A-RAID.
But this will soon be retired for a new system

No, it is an old board can't remember what it is. I use a promise IDE controller.
