I don't know much about how DVD-R drives work, but this is just an idea a friend and I came up with that might just work...
You couldn't have a dual-layer DVD-R because no matter what layer you burn first the second burning will write off the first one, right?
Why not have the first layer (innermost) as a normal DVD-R, but the outer layer ad a DVD-RW? That way, you'd burn the first layer and because DVD-RW presumably uses a different wavelength of laser, the burning of the second layer wouldn't harm the already-burned layer.
Now for the experts to tell me how wrong I am...![]()

How would the laser break through the reflective layer of the first layer>

Just a stray thought for what it's worth.
I wonder if you could polarize the laser and have an even polarity on the outermost layer.
Perhaps if there were some type of dye that could be deposited that would change polarity to match that of the laser?
Oh well, I am happy with single layer media.I can remember paying $19.99 each for DVD+RWs.
I am sure that if anyone does perfect some way of creating dual layer media that is will be MORE than TWICE as expensive as single layer.
What I would really like to see is high quality DVD media for around $0.25 each.Just what is this reality thing anyway?
