  1. Someone at BestBuy told me that the audio capture is done on the ATI AIW card itself and has nothing to do with the sound card, but the sound on my captures sounds horrible and I want to try and improve it. Will getting a better sound card (I have a Muse now, thinking about getting a sound blaster) make a difference in the final quality of my sound?

  2. Hi,
Whoever told you that is wrong.
I have an ATI AIW 128 Pro and this card is connected to your sound card line-in input. When capturing, sound goes "through" the ATI and is captured by the sound card through this line-in input.

To make a long story short, changing your sound card will have an impact on the captured sound in your videos.

(My personal advice ; stay away from SoundBlaster Live, since it sometimes produces cracks and pops in your captured movies, see many posts on this topic)

    Good luck.

Yeah, I 'd got soundblaster, and my captured avi's heard like broken mp3s...
I change it with a Hercules furtissimo, and 2 things happen!
    1. The sound get great
    2. The CPU suddently used only 60% on full pal capturing. No frame drops at last!

So, yes: Change your sound card. Improves a lot of things!

My own experience showed me that the sound card makes a huge difference. I got rid of my SB Live as it was giving a real popcorn show in every capture i did and this on both of my computers one in win98 & the other win Me.Changed for a "el cheapo " ess pci card and "voila" no more cracking sound , and no mre dropped frames in high bit rate (+ 2mb/s).So if you have a chance to try a friend's card , give it a try, you might end up with a good result.
Don't ever let other people think for you ,
they will always take the wrong decision...
