I'm looking at some laptops right now and comparing prices. Some of the models that I'm interested in are shipping with XP Home, which I don't want to run. If I do go with a PC based laptop and choose one of those, I'm probably going to "downgrade" to Windows 2000 Pro.

Does OS installation go basically the same on a laptop, as it does with a desktop? I've done desktop installations to the point where I can do it blindfolded, but I have very little experience with laptops.

Hopefully I can just stick the cd in, reformat, partition, and install.

    Yep!

Basicly you´re right. However you do need to be aware of some drivers.
Make sure you get them from the web ( or from the CD before ).

The CD drive will normally be recognised without issues. So will the onboard video card.

the external ports (like S-video out etc.) may need the correct video driver but that´s a problem afterwards.

Same goes for the PCMCIA slots on the side Wether it´s type I or II. They do need specific drivers.

Give us a shout if you run into probs.

Yea cut and dry, but if you already own 2000 make them throw in PRO and see if you like it. Home sucks but I like Pro and it is stable as hell. For the money you’re putting out for a new notebook you should be able to barter a little.

    Good Luck

Comment: If you get XP Pro on the box, you have the right to downgrade to W2K if you decide not to like it that much :P

And if I can add :P Get the new IBM Thinkpad T40 or R40 they rock :P (got the T30 myself)

Try to get Centrino Technology if your going with INTEL.
And dont forget to check out AMD. But I agree that you should change the O.S. Home sucks ass and Pro is the way to go... while i still prefere to stick with 2k instead of XP because of stability and just plain looks, Ive never been able to get used to the XP gui.
