I've successfully gotten to the point of burning my DVD using
DVD2Onex. I have a Mac G4 with built in burner and it told me that my
blank disc didn't have enough space to burn my movie.
I have a CD-R 80 minutes 700 mg disk. Is it possible to split the movie into two discs or do I have to get something with more mg?
Also when it asks to burn the Video_TS and the Audio files do I drag both
into the empty to be burned disc...or with just movie only copying...do I just drag in
the folder with the Video_TS only?
    Thanks for any help...

I may be seriously misunderstanding your question, but to the best of my knowledge, DVD2one produces files that are supposed to be burned to DVD blank media, not CD blank media.

    Dear Ladd:
You didn't misunderstand at all. I'm an idiot.
Thanks for pointing out the obvious. I've been
buying blank cd's in bulk from Costco..
Can I get blank DVD's there..or do I have to go
to a specialty store like Fry's?
    Thanks much...

    One last thing...
Once said blank DVD's are acquired, I'd still like to know what I have
to drag into the disc...two files or one? (Vid and audio)...
Sorry..but this is all new to me and I've almost figured it out..

    Mac-DVD-Burner..

Will you give me some more advice? Everything I read in the thread you provided talked about burning with Toast. I used Toast with my old Mac as an exterior burner. Now that I have the G4.. well..the burner is built in ..

So, I continue to ask for help. If I follow Galactica's very informative
method of burning DVD's,and ignore the part about using Toast Titanium.. do I take the folder which now holds VIDEO_TS
and ADD to that folder the new AUDIO-TS folder making them one folder named "Gladiator"...or are they kept separate?
Do I then put the DVD into the computer...name the disc the same as the folder
drag the folder into the DVD disc..copy it...then drag it down to trash and burn it?

Do I have to have Toast Titanium to burn?
    Yikes, don't you hate beginners?

Ok, if you are going to use DISK COPY burner, you must load the blank dvd to your desktop. Then, drag your VIDEO_TS AND AUDIO_TS fodler to the disk such that they are the only two folders in that disk.

Then burn. Technically thats how its done, however!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have never done it this way becaues I think, that this wont work. The only way is to try.

You want to name the DVD GLADIATOR
and put both the AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS folder in it. Then burn.

You may also be able to use a freeware burning software like MISSING MEDIA BURNER which ill look at and see if i can write a tutorial to also

    best of luck

I'm heading to MacForce (a local Mac store) for Toast Titanium. If you say it's worth it, then I'm convinced.

I continue to learn. Thanks for your generous input.

you dont necessarly need to go to the store, although you can

you can save 10 dollars if you buy it on line and downlaod a disk image (What i did)

    http://www.roxio.com/en/products/toast/index.jhtml

and you see the downloadable price is 10 dollars less than the box price.

Its WELL worth it, not only does it make burning easy, but it will allow you to support third party burners that disk copy does not!

if you ever get another burner or anything like that.

I'm giving it a go today. Checked your suggestion for buying
blank DVD's online...the price seems good. Office Max wanted
25 bucks for a five pack.

yea never get them from a store locally!

I just got a pack of DVDPRO disk, 50 disks for less than 50 dollars! but the catch is, 1x only. WHO CARES ill let it burn slowly for that price!

And actually, i find that the slower the burn, the more likely your DVD will be PERFECT! (sometimes you can get errors with higher burn speeds!)

here's the link if you want to give these a try:
    http://meritline.com/dvdprobul47d.html

likewise, if you hate burnign at 1x because it takes a long time, they same brand is avaliable at 1x -4x rated disks at this link:
    http://meritline.com/nedv1dv4forg.html

    ENJOY

I've bookmarked both of them; thank you.
Here's another question. How do you label your DVD's?
I have CD Stomper and the software is great for CD's...
Will it work for DVD's? I've read that they require their own
    labels...

I've been quite the nag in this discussion group and others trying to find out what media to purchase for use with the SuperDrive burner in my Mac. I have one of the "mid-range" burners Apple installs, OEM'd from manufacturer "HL-DT-ST", model DVD-RW GCA-4020B.

Galactica has offered his advice in the past re: DVDpro disks and I received two of them in the sampler pak ordered from Meritline (also available from SuperMediaStore in their sampler pak, which contains some of the same brands, but also some that are different than those offered in the Meritline pak). And yes, I know that both companies are the same company.

I wasn't going to post any results until more testing was done, but the mention of DVDpro disks today was too convenient to pass up.

The first DVD-R test burn I tried was with the DVDpro 1X disc (Mertiline #102-009). Using DVD Backup, DVD2one OSX (DeTOX) and Toast, I burned a "whole disc" backup of "The Matrix" at 2X speed.

The DVDpro disc burned completely at 2X with no problems and verified OK. Playback on the G4 using DVD Player utility and on the stand-alone JVC-N40BK player works fine. I paid special attention to the last 10 minutes of the move to see if there were any issues with data burned at the outer edges of the disc, but I didn't see any.

I have no idea if the movie data *IS* the data that's at the edge of the disk, but I've read that that is what one is supposed to do to check for "completely filling up the disc" compatibilty, so that's what I did.

While I have 8 or 9 other brands of discs to try, the first test, if repeatable, seems to indicate that if you have the 2X SuperDrive OEM'd from HL-DT-ST, model DVD-RW GCA-4020B, the DVDpro discs available for under $1 each work great.

As an additional note, preliminary burn testing was done using an OptoDisc 1X DVD-RW (SuperMediaStore #DVD01X0020) that came in their sample pak. I have burned it at maximum 1X speed and erased it three times so far with no problems. It is also playable on the JVC-N40BK stand-alone player.

Sweet! you are about 2 days ahead of me! I just ordered the same pack myself to test it out and post my results!

The interesting thing that we will find out here is that I am using a non standard apple dvd drive (toshiba sd-r5002) and it will be good to see if I get the same results as you

Tell ya what, make a new post with your results for each brand as you test them also!
I realize thats 12 disks and that you may not wnat to burn all 12 now so just post what you have and then you can edit it as you go along. I plan to do the same and we can inform people of the brands in that pack!

Im glad to hear the DVDPRO disks burn at 2x for you! I just got the 50 pack in the mail and although the disks are rated at 1x i have heard that thay may burn at 2x!!!!!!!! which means for less than a dollar per disk you can get great dvd-r's that burn at 2x. Ill have to see if they do the same in my drive

    Excellent information!!!!!

Also, per this issue, I have noted you cant just jump to the end of the movie, unelss you did just a movie only copy!

the best way I have found to confirm a complete successful burn, if you are wondering, is to open the VIDEO_TS folder you burned, locate the very very last .vob file. Even if its really small one! Then, open that file in Video Lan. Note what video is playing back, usually a part of the bonus material if DISK COPY. Then attempt to load that portion of the dvd and if it plays back with no problems, then the dvd is fine!

I only say this because I had one dvd error with 5 min remaining. Thought it was wasted, but it only screws up the very last bonus option (which i could care less about since the movie plays fine and all other options works).

Just more info for inquiring minds.

I just checked this out using VLC Media Player (the updated Video Lan client) and you are correct! The last .VOB file from my Matrix DeTOX output is one of the bonus material videos. Unfortunately, it is "the blue pill" and I can't remember where to access it to test the burned DVD!

Now if I could just figure out why when working with "The Matrix", DeTox in "movie only" mode shows five 2hr:16m movies (I get to guess which one).

And when in "disk copy" mode, I have to figure out which of the three source audio tracks are necessary if I want the final output to contain the main audio track AND the "music only" audio track AND the "commentary" audio track. Selecting all three source audio tracks gives me all three final audio options, but I also get all three final options if I select only source audio #1 and audio #3 (but not with audio #1 and #2, nor with #2 and #3)

Well, I figured it out in the sense that I DeTOX'd all the combinations and then played the output to see what happened. Not very efficient, nor does it offer me (or anyone else) any insight as to what's going on...

But your compliment is appreciated nonetheless!

    Help!

    I got everything done...I got 10 DVD's to test...Optimum data 4.7GB DVD+R..
I got toast up and dragged the file with VIDEO_TS..but..was I supposed to
add the blank AUDIO_TS folder to VIDEO_TS as one folder?
Anyway, I dragged all three into toast (after choosing DVD) and the darn thing kept asking me to put in a disk ("waiting for writer") and wouldn't burn!
I chose "movie only" when making the file..
    What do I do now?

Are you saying that there are 7.5GB if files in your AUDIO_TS folder? IF so then they shouldn't be there. Also, what burner are you using?

Here's the problem. Apple superdrives are DVD-R. Return these disks and get some dvd-r disks.

No no, dont drag the VIDEO_TS folder to toast. This will not make a standard video dvd. what that does is make a dvd disk titled VIDEO_TS with the .vob files burned in the root of the disk. this is incorrect and wont make a playable dvd.

All three what??? Folders? you cant drag all three in at a time! Easiest least confusing way is this

    1. Open toast
    2. Click DVD from the OTHER menu
    3. Add New Disk with the option at lower left corner.
    4. Go to the disk you now see in the toast menu, rename it (BUGS_LIFE) or whatever it was
    5. Click NEW FOLDER in toast.
    6. Rename that folder to AUDIO_TS
    7. Drag your 4.4 GB VIDEO_TS folder you got from DTOX into the Toast window, it will now show up as a folder below or above (cant remember) the AUDIO_TS folder. Note how it says 4.4GB next to it and the AUDIO_TS folder says 0.

Disk total should then be 4.4GB. Put in a blank DVD-R disk, push burn, choose speed, then WRITE DISK

thats impossible, the AUDIO_TS folder cannot be 7.5 GB Likewise, you are not dragging in the correct VIDOE_TS folder since DTOX is 4.4GB. My guess is you accidently got the VIDEO_TS backup folder
    No worries

you are on the right track, get some DVD-R disks and your all set!

It really depends on what you want.

Do you want to have all the bonus material, and the ability of the DVD menu? Or is the Movie all you want, such that when you put the dvd in your movie will start right up and you have chapters but no menu/bonus material.

    Its up to you really.

One thing to note, I suggest switchign the default file size to 4444megs.

Just click on the pulldown menu and choose USER DEFINED, i think or whatever the option is so you can type in your desired size for the output. Sometimes the default size will give you a VIDEO_TS that is just a little too large for some dvd-r. 4444 megs ensures you have the max file size and still the ability to burn to most all dvd-r brand dvd's

best of luck. keep us posted on the progress

    thanks
    Galactica
