help w bitrate selection for mpeg to divx conv

I have several mpegs that i would like to convert to one disc's worth of divx, but no matter how many times i try to convert it, at all bitrates, I always get the same filesize! its making me crazy! i have used DVTool and BitrateCalc to guage the bitrates, both with no success.

the next leg of the problem is, after settling for a huge filesize from mpeg>divx, i figured I'd try to convert again, for the smaller size, but THE SAME THIUNG HAPPENS! every bitrate from 750 to 100, and mp3 from 128 to 64, all givbe exactly the same filesize..... Any advice?!?

oh, of course...in my rage i forgot the details. using vdub 1.5.2, with divx502 and the fraunhoffer codec for mp3

Your going to have to list the codec setting your using. There's no other way...tedious but necessary.

I'm nnot exactly sure what you mean, but I'll try to give that info. I have not changed anything from the default setup of Divx 502. The settings that I can see are

1 Pass
Quick Config CLI = -b1 100 -key 300 -dr 2,2,2000,10,20 -sc 50 -pq 5
Max Keyframe Interval = 300
Data Rate Control = 2,2,2000,10,20
Manage settings = empty

everything else is grayed out.

Is that the info you need to help?

What 1-Pass method are you using? It looks like your using 100kbps. You should also look at getting the latest DivX version. There are newer versions than 5.0.2

I used 100 on the last encode, in a desperate attempt to get the filesize down. That is when I realized I was getting exactly the same filesize at any bitrate, even absurdly low ones! Both of the bitrate covnersion tools told me I should be using approximately 700 to get the 120 minutes or so onto one 80 minute disc. So this is the problem, at 700 or 100, i wind up with a filesize of 900+ meg. Do u think the newer codec will change this? I'll get it, but it just doesn't seem rational, u know? Encoding at 20% of a previous encode should absolutely guarantee less data, and hence a smaller filesize! Hence my madness. Again, please help!!!

I never use DivX, so I can't be of too much help. I use XviD. If you want to use it, then I would definately ensure you have the latest version. It's not calculating the bitrate properly, or your looking at the first pass AVI, of a multipass set.

Give XviD a try. Just put in the output size your want, rather than the bitrate. Just remember that the size you give it does not include the audio. Encode your audio first so you know exactly how large it is, or use a DivX calculator.
