Hello, normally I use bitrate, is there any advantage to using a target quantizer for converting mpeg 2 files recorded off standard definition digital cable?

As with any encoder, providing a bitrate and encoding either CBR or 2-pass VBR will give you a known file size, possibly at the sacrifice to quality if the bitrate is too low. Quantizer gives you a known quality level (relative to the source) but with an unknown file size. If quality is the most important factor then use target quantizer encoding and live with the file size. It will also be faster than 2-pass VBR encoding as it is a single pass process.
