  1. I have been using TMPG in Virtual PC to make mpeg2 (SVCD) files able to play on my DVD player. I use the Mpeg Tools and the multiplexing function. I thought that I was converting the file to an MPEG1 VCD ready file. Someone told me that I am actually just adding some sort of header to the MPEG2 file to make it read as an MPEG1. ?????
What I really want to do is stop using my virtual PC to do this. Am I able to do this with ffmpeg? And if not, what programs are out there?
I have not had much success with this program.

ffmpegX will convert to MPEG-1, but you can also do the same with TMPGEnc if that's what you're used to using. Multiplexing is not doing what you want it to do. You have to re-encode the video. Select either the VCD-NTSC or VCD-PAL template in the wizard, and keep using the wizard until it starts encoding. This will produce VCD-standard MPEG-1 streams.

no -- acually you dont have to re-encode --

    with tmpgenc

you are taking a svcd stream (mpeg2) and multiplexing it with vcd settings which changes the header of the file to mpeg1 (vcd) ..

this is a pretty standard operation for a lot of players and there is a lot about it in the guide sections ..

doesnt mater if you are on mac or pc -- the end result is the same ..

  4. TMPG works fine for me. And the results are great. But I am using Virtual PC it seems to take a bit longer. My PC friend say it takes him about 8 minutes when it takes me 30 - 50 minutes for. Since I'm running a Mac I would like to use a Mac progam.
Does FFmepeg allow you to add the mpeg1 header?

Not sure if this will work but it won't hurt anything to try... demux your MPEG-2 file. Rename the m2v to an m1v extention, and then mux them back as VCD.
