I've been happily creating DVDs for a few months but decided to build a faster machine so it wouldn't take so long. The new machine is built and I used PC Upgrade Commander to create a duplicate of the old machine and everything (seemed) is running nicely.

Except that whenever I try to convert a reasonable length AVI my PC freezes and I have to reboot. It happens in DVD Workshop when I try to burn the DVD and it also happens in Video Factory if I try to save my video work to an MPEG-2 (using their Standard MPEG-2 plugin).

Thinking it was maybe the AVIs I tried burning the DVD on my old machine and it worked. So I installed XP Pro onto a new partition on the new machine and only put on SP1, DWS and Video Factory. The result - I can convert the AVIs to MPEG no problem.

Real small (like 6 or 7 minutes) AVIs don't freeze the machine, the AVIs I were trying obviously aren't corrupt and the fact that two programs both suffer the same problem suggest there is something not right with the copy of my old XP environment. Could there be something in the OS that both programs are trying to use that is screwing them up? Anyone here have any ideas where to start?

One thing that just struck me as I typed is that the old machine was a P4 whereas the new machine is an Athlon 2700+, maybe that has something to do with it?

Cheers

Paul
ps I think my workflow isn't relevant to the problem but as an fyi I had two PAL videos that I captured using a Samsung SV-5000W through the datavideo DAC-100 capture box into DVD Workshop. I edited the AVI files in Video Factory and saved them as new AVIs, went back to DVDWS to author the DVD.
