  1. I have been converting divx's to DVD (my DVD player can't handle VCDs) but the playback appears jerky on my PAL TV.

My DVD player can however play PAL or NTSC DVDs.

I use DIVXrepair to repair bad frames, TMPGENC to convert to mpg and then ULEAD DVD movie factory 2 to write the DVD.

The divxs are 23.976 fps and are either 16:9 or 2.21:1 (whatever that is) format.

In TMPGENC I load the NTSC (film) template the unlock it and amend the following settings:

Video - Aspect ratio 16:9; Video - frame rate 23.976

I have read everything on the internet, tried 3:2 pulldown etc and am now getting confused.

Is there a particular setting I should use to playback on a PAL TV?

    Help would be much appreciated

    Thanks

I believe you are to select in TMPGEnc's advanced settings Do not frame rate conversion.

If you do that you will have a/v synch problems, as it plays the 23.976 movie at 25 fps, 4.27% faster than it should be, but the audio won't be similarly speeded up.

The way to do 23.976->25 for PAL is as follows:

    1. Use VirtualDub to extract the audio track at 23.976fps.
    2. Use BeSweet to convert the audio from 23.976->25fps.
    3. Use VirtualDub to extract the video track, setting the frame rate at 25fps and using "direct stream copy"
    4. Use the resulting 2 files in TMPGEnc.
    or
    4. Use the 25fps video file in TMPGEnc (ES Video Only) and use BeSweet to convert the audio into whatever format you will be using to author (AC3/MP2)

This is only a quick and dirty "guide", it should work for most downloaded movies, but there are a lot of problems you may run into, e.g: frame rate not exactly 23.976, video and audio tracks having different lengths, etc.

  4. Either that or run both through TMPGenc using the NTSC template for DVD, load in the film, do the audio also, TMPGenc should enable 3:2 pull down automatically. Onc its run through author it, works everytime for me

My personal favorite is to use a guide. Try truman's. Click here.

  6. But do I actually need to convert it to PAL to play on my TV (the TV is quite old, say 15 years!). Should it not just play at 23.976?

  7. The DVD player does the conversion not the TV, the signal coming out of the DVD is Pal. Convert it using TMPGenc, using the NTSC DVD template and drop it in to DVDlab, I mixed a Pal and a NTSC (23.97) onto a PAL DVD, both work perfect, good program.

It could well be your TV as it's 15 years old.

Even mine which is only 8 years old has that jittery playback, especially using NTSC DVD's/VCD/SVCD's.

    More-so using NTSC VCD/SVCD.

My advise would be to convert your Dvix's to PAL to elimanate the jittery playback problem using TMPGEnc.

Right, I went back to basics and just used the DVD(PAL) template in TMPGENC with no options amended whatsoever.

The picture was brilliant - no jerkiness at all - but the sound was out of sync.

I guess I have to convert the sound somehow, so I will have a look at some more guides, but if anyone can help me it would be much appreciated!

    Thanks
