The prevailing rule of thumb is never let Nero convert anything for you. Only let Nero burn for you. Anyway, you may want to take a look at TMPGEnc to encode your video into DVD format. The MPEG-2 function, of which DVD video is a part, is available for 30 days for free.

If you are intereested, look at this guide.

Hi I have tried what you said and followed the guides for encoding and also the nero guide, but have ended up with 3 coasters it keeps saying on one dvd player "wrong disc" and another one "cannot play" any ideas what I am doing wrong, the film I captured is just over an hour long so I used the dvd rom(udf) setting and dragged ove into a new folder VIDEO_TS the encoded mpg2 but not had any success It plays ok on my pc in windows media player do you think this has anything to do with it , i.e. opening it as a windows media file??????????

    1. check to make sure your dvd is compliant (frame rate, size, etc.)

    2. check to make sure your dvd player plays dvd-r

    3. what version of Nero are you using? If you are using 5.5.10.15 or above, you shouldn't have to burn as a UDF data disc, you can burn as a dvd-video disc - the compatiblility problems have been worked out. If you don't have that new a version, go and upgrade, it's free.

If you must use an older version, make sure you are burning as a UDF 1.02 disc, not as a 1.50 disc, otherwise you've done a lot of work to defeat the purpose of the workaround.

    4. get a couple of -RW discs.... that way you won't be wasting anything, you can burn a test on those discs, and if it doesn't work, you can re-burn it.

    I just realized something....

.... did you use any authoring software....

..... or did you just burn an mpeg file to disc?

a dvd is not just mpeg files on disc, you need to run this through an authoring program to get the proper .vob & .ifo files. Check the How To: Author section at left for more info & guides.

(some dvd players can play raw mpeg files from disc, but they aren't as common - check the DVD Players section for compatability of your player).

The file in question was over 2gig thats why I had to use the dvd-rom(udf) in nero, it is nearly 4gig in size. I have had no other probs with dvd -r discs they have played ok. I think you may have the solution in me not authoring it.
To start with I capture the video using advc100 and ezdv then I encoded to mpg2 with tmpg, it was at this point I was pointed to the guide for burning with nero I just dragged the files I had encoded not realising they had to be authored. I am starting afresh now encoding to mpg2 will then use dvd decrypter see if that makes it easier. I assume I can just do a straight burn from this after authoring with decryptor and forget about "nero", I am using the latest version of nero by the way, Thanks for all the help.....................here's hoping

okay, we're making progress, but DVD Decrypter is not an authoring program.

Try DVD Lab (30-day trial period, amazing program) or TMPGenc Author (haven't tried that one yet, but I think it has a trial period).

Once you've authored the dvd, you'll have a folder with .vob and .ifo files in it (it may even make the AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS folders for you, with all the files in the VIDEO_TS folder).

Open Nero, select dvd-video, open the VIDEO_TS folder on the dvd-video, and drag over all the files your authoring program created (not any folders it created, though)

then burn it - you should be good to go.

check the How To: Author for more info on the authoring process.

And if Nero wants to convert anything for you, don't let it.
