    Hallo,

    DV video is very "hard" and sharp compared to analog Video captured via Y/C for example.

    As it is difficult for encoders to compress and handel sharp edges wouldn't it be better to soften the video first with some filter and then encode it?

    Do you think you might get better quality especially in lower bitrates?

    Absolutely. DV is incredibly complex footage, and if you look closely at the raw image, there is tons of info that you don't even want. It can get grainy, especially in low light and it looks as if every single pixel on the screen moves slightly. By applying light noise reduction it really cleans all this up and makes your movie more compressible. I always apply just a little bit of noise reduction to my dv footage even when encoding with a very high bitrate.
