I just recently started fooling around with Premier 6.5 by following the tutorials from Wrigley. com. I imported a funny avi clip to video 1 and added an animated title clip to video 2. The title clip on video 2 has a little button activated that alows me to put in key frames and adjust the "rubber band". The avi clip in video 1 does not have the key frame or the rubberband buttons available therefore I cannot figure out how to make my clip slowly fade to black at the end. I would like to know two things.

One is how to enable keyframing for the avi in video 1.
Two how to fade the avi to black at the end of the clip.

I did some preliminary editing of the clip using virtual dub and I couldn't figure out how to make that file fade to black before imprting it to premiere. Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance,

An easy way to fade to black is to add short black video clip at end of clip on video 1. You can use a 720x480 black bmp if you want. Then insert a cross fade transition between the two clips. This will make it fade to black. If you extend the end of the transition deeper into the black clip, it should fade a little more slowly. But you can experiment.

Another way is to render the prodject to AVI. Then put the new AVI on video 2 and a black video clip on video 1. Then use the keyframing on video 2 and fade as you want.

Also check out the Virtual clip tutorial on that site.

    Hope that helps.

  3. I have faded to a black screen before and never had to use a black image. Just use the fade with nothing on the 2 (or other) video track.

Clip A on track one. Black on track two, trasition between them. Clib B on track one and transition from black to track one. You can change the length of the transistions by adjusting the length of black, I use an all black BMP of the correct resolution.

There are other ways to do this, but this is pretty simple. I never did like all the wipe transisitions, looks like a 14 year old went nuts.

    From the dropdown menu

    "File"
    "New"
    "Black Video"

Drag the new black video from the Project Window to your timeline and insert the transition of your choice.

  6. The easy way:

If you have just V1A, V1B and V2, then goto Timeline -------> Add video track. Now you should have V1A, V1B, V2 and V3.

in the Timeline tools select Razor Tool:

if you are using V2 to the end of the video, Cut the last part of V2 and drag it to V3.
Cut the last part of your video an drag it to V2, if the audio muve with the video you should goto Clicp -----> Unlink Audio and Video. When the video is in V2, you can use the Rubber band to fade out

So what Mando is saying, is only Tracks 2 and above have adjustable / keyframeable transparency to allow the fading. You can have up to 99 video tracks so there should be plenty of space.

If you want to continue to use the the lower tracks, you just crossfade to black using a transition.

Thanks for all of the ips guyz. Paul W's suggestion was the easiest and it worked great. Thanks a million. There are so many ways to do the same thing in premier. It's overwhelming.

I find the most effective way (and fast) is to insert the Black Video onto V2 50/50 between the two video clips you want to transition, click the arrow to expand the timeline track, and click in the middle on the transparency red rubber band to make a handle, and then drag each of the edge rubber band handles down each side to 0% with the middle still set at 100%.

I find this creates a very smooth, gradual fade to black, and fade from black. If you don't need it to fade back from black then don't reduce the right side band handle.

Thanks for the tip, that sound like a good idea. I hadn't thought about fading back in again.
