Hi, guys,
Anyone know of a DVD player with MP3-DVD and long filename support?
Considering that my last post (asking if anyone knew of a DVD changer with DVD-MP3 support) had a ton of reads but no replies.. it seems that people are interested in this topic but didn't know of an answer..
So, how about this..
Can anyone reply to this message with a DVD player (single) that plays DVD-MP3's with long filename support? (I mean, heck.. you have to be able to see the filename if you have 600+ songs on there!).
The problem with using the www.dvdrhelp.com database for this is that there is a lot of conflicting statements about whether most of the DVD players on there support MP3-DVD's (one guy will says yes, the next will say no). Also, let's try to mention players that are ** relatively inexpensive and are easily accessible and returnable if not liked, etc. (e.g. mintek from best buy, apex from circuit city, etc.).
I've read pretty definitively that the Mintekk 1600, for instance, plays DVD-MP3's...
Any suggestions?

I KNOW THAT THE MINTEK DOES IT, AND ALSO THE KOSS 2165. THAT IS THE ONLY 2 I HAVE EVER COME ACROSS IN MY FINDINGS AND READINGS. I JUST BOUGHT A PORTABLE SONY DVD-ROM/CD-WRITER (LOOKS LIKE A CD WALKMAN) THAT DOES IT. THE SONY WORKS GREAT AND PLAYS ALL MY DVD-MP3 DISCS FLAWLESSLY. NOW I HAVE MY WHOLE CD COLLECTION ON 3 DISCS!!!!!

SergeantD,
Which portable Sony player did you buy that plays MP3-DVD discs? That's pretty cool.
Also, do the Mintek 1600 and Koss 2165 support LONG MP3 filenames? It was my understanding that the Mintek 1600 does NOT. -
This is the SONY player: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3025576662&category=15054
As far as filenames, I don't know. I just know those 2 players read DVD-MP3s -
cyberian, what's the deal with long files? just structure your discs. root folder has a folder for each artist. in the artist folder you have a folder for each album, and in the album folder you have numbered and named MP3-s.

I have the Mintek 1600 and I love it's DVD-MP3 playing capability. But no, it does not support long names, and I agree that this is a bummer, but for $50 I'll live with it...flan's right about setting up the folders, but I, for example, ripped a good chunk of my CDs before I even realized that MusicMatch was set up to give me looong names...and now I'm too lazy to go back and change 'em all

flan,
yeah, you're kinda right.. long filename support isn't the biggest thing.. but it would be nice. as karate was saying, many of us already have our mp3's ripped and made -- and many of mine have very long filenames. so, even if you're able to navigate to individual albums by structuring the discs (which i do anyway), in my experience with dvd players w/ no long filename support each file appears exactly the same if they're named "<artist> or <album> <album name> <track#> <track title>", etc.. they just show the first few characters and then usually a ~ tilde to show that the name continues..
anyway, if one has tons of mp3's already made with long filenames, a dvd player wthout support for the long names doesn't allow one to differentiate b/w individual tracks without listening to each one of them and cycling through.. ;(
any other work-arounds anyone know of?
any other players anyone can suggest? -
oh,
and another thing that is a bit frustrating about this.. is that you know that within a year or so (probably less) all cd/dvd players will support DVD-MP3.. just as at first many players did not support CD-R or DVD-R or even mp3 but now every single one does.. (even the cheapies)..
so what sucks is that many of us have been waiting for this thing for a while, and for me in particular, for a few different reasons i don't have any more time to fart around with this.. and just want to pick something up and be done with it.. all the while if this was simply taking place 6 months or a year from now, it wouldn't be a problem at all..
even though many people don't see the need for this sort of thing just yet, as DVD writers are falling so fast (a friend just bought the Pioneer 4x for $150!), i imagine that many people will be wanting this feature.
.. but i guess this sort of thing always happens with any technology type thing.. can't ask for absolutely everything. ;)
