  2. Use another program to convert the AVi to MPG1(i.e. TMPGENc), then just use Nero to create the VCD.

I was not very happy with the conversions that Nero does, TMPGENc allows me to tweek.

I found that the converter with Nero was OK, I used it when I was first started making VCDs. If you have a low action video file, it's OK, but otherwise, andkiich is correct, go with TMPGEnc. After you've had a chance to play with the settings and get used to TMPGEnc, you'll wonder how you ever got along without it. If you still want to use Nero, make sure the box is checked when you are choosing the CD type (i.e. CDROM, VCD, etc.) that says "create standard compliant CD". Are you using the wizard in Nero?

You did not mention how long your AVI file was in terms of playing time.

VCD (standard) works out at about 10Mb per minute (1150kbps for video, 224kbps for audio).

So assuming Nero encoded correctly, I am guessing your AVI was somewhere around 89 minutes long? If that is the case, Nero did the right thing, and any other program will do the same if it is creating a compliant VCD file.

    Perhaps this is your problem.

It is simply twice as big as it needs to be.
