  1. I want to convert a very short videoclip (just a motion by a hand, almost) into a cartoon look.
The technique i am looking at is this
    1. record the video clip using digital camera, into .mov format
    2. convert it to still frames of all the frames
    3. maybe print them
    4. dram similar images on paper
    5. scan those images
    6. turn the images into a new video

Anyone have suggestions for software for doing this? I have a scanner an' all that, so basicly what i need help with its step 2 and 6.

Well, unless someone else has better ideas on how to achieve the same thing.

Oh, i almost forgot.... i actually want the output to be an animated gif!

I use GIF Construction Set from Alchemy Mindworks www.mindworkshop.com to create animated GIFs. You can use the individual scanned images or an uncompressed avi as the source.

  3. You can also use Flash to make animations.

There are many techniques to turn video into more organic looking animation.

Look at some of the posterisation filters or some of the noise filters in virtualdub. Use high enough settings and details will blend into large slabs of colour. Mix a few together and it will look quite interesting.

If you can get still frames, load them into photoshop and look at filters or even handpainting in photoshop. If you get a nice combination of filters happening, create actions to batch process the frames.

The use something Gif Constructionset to compile the final file.

or you can import the first file into Flash and Flash will ask if you want to import the intire sequence, Flash will the offer many export options such as animated gif, .exe self contained video, swf Flash default, and even apple quicktime.. so there are a lot of ways. I know you must not want to lose tooo much time before you find a way also.

  6. Photoshop>imageready for animated gifs. Or if you can figure out Flash, which would be best bet.

So you are asking how to turn a video into a bunch of stills, and then how to put those stills back into a video stream again? Easy, just use VirtualDub. Load the video and select file/save folder as frames. You'll get one still for each frame of video. After editing, just make sure your stills are all named in chronological order by number. Then load the first one in VirtualDub and it will load all the rest in sequence. Then you can save out to avi or frameserve to your encoder.

TMPGenc can do all this as well.

Another way is to import the original video into Premiere Pro or 6.5 and drop the Posterize filter on the clip, adjust it maybe use the channel mixer and some color adjustment and wah lah instant cartoon effect. You can also strip the audio and google for some cartoon sounds.
