  1. what template should I shoose for a xvcd?

  2. I ended up making a simple xVCD template. I used unlock (in the "extras" directory), then changed the kbps to 1550 (still 352x240 CBR, still 224kbps audio). In the "advanced" tab, I changed the audio to 200%. Then I saved the template, and edited my file with a text editor so everything that can be locked will be.

Also, I normalize audio in DVD2AVI. Now I find DVD audio annoying, because its either too loud or too soft!

It looks good, sounds great, and works on every player I've tried.

kimpan, I see this question "which template..", "best template.." quite often. There is no best template, because every setting depends on the source, the movie time and many others.
XVCD means nothing else than set whatever you want.
If I want to fit a 120min movie on 2 CDs, I can select VBR 2pass avg bitrate about1600 kbps, res 352x240 or 352x480.
If I want to fit a 80min movie on 2 CDs, I can select CBR 2500 ,res 480x480 or even 720x480.
Every source requires its own best template.
If you convert a DivX or VHS to MPEG you probably need a noise reduction filter...

Usually a DVD is a well-encoded, clear source. So you don't need a noise reduction filter for dvd to vcd/xvcd/svcd conversions.
DivX is an AVI codec, probably the best high resolution codec, very popular, a completely different format than MPEG.
