  1. I just got my hands on a pioneer dvr-104 stock dvd-rw drive. And I threw it into my G4, all happy that I could burn dvds. Imagine my horror when the first disc I burned at 2x (an apple 2x dvd-r) finished, but was unreadable.

But, come to find out, there's a shitload of issues with that model that can't easily be fixed. The apple superdrive firmware update won't work on it and the firmware updater from Pioneer a.) only works in 9 and b.) when I used it in 9 on my machine, it said it couldn't find the drive and died.

I've read that you can throw the drive into a PC and update the firmware and then put it back in a mac. But, there's even more firmware issues with the PC updaters...different people get different results with different discs with different versions of the firmware, etc.

Does anyone have any sage-like advice on this? Or should I be happy with burning at 1x for the foreseeable future?

    Thanks.
