  1. I have a movie file in divx format that I also converted to svcd. I wanted to put the movie on a dvd-r but was wondering which format I should use. Will the divx or svcd be of better quality onto dvd or is there no difference? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hello

If the DivX file is very high quality then I would use that. The DivX format can easily be of much higher quality that SVCD but of course that all depends on how the DivX was created such as the resolution used and the bitrate. More often than not a DivX will be of higher quality than any SVCD will be. However I have seen some poorly made DivX files floating around out there on the net. Still though, the chance of the SVCD being a better source is very low.

I have converted full screen DivX movies (640x480 but of course the height may be less than 480 if it is widescreen) to DVD-R and the quality is usually very good unless it is a crap quality DivX.

Did you make the SVCD from the DivX or were both created straight from a DVD source? If the SVCD was made from the DivX then definately use the DivX to make the DVD. If the SVCD came straight from a DVD I would still say you are better off with the DivX as a source unless the resolution of it is less than the SVCD (highly doubtful) and/or the image is very poor (indicating a VERY low bitrate was used). In short, which ever looks better now (either the DivX or the SVCD) will be the better source for the DVD you will be creating.

    HOWEVER ...
If you are happy with the quality of the SVCD there is a trick that allows you to modify it in such a way so that you can burn it to a DVD-R (or DVD+R) without the need to do any re-encoding. However, the final DVD you make will not be in an official DVD format. It will most likely be more compatable amoung DVD players than the original SVCD disc(s) but not all DVD players will be able to play it.

SVCD can be put on DVD with jsut an audio bitrate change. Check the guides, but if you have SVCD, you are 90% of the way done to DVD.
