  1. hi!

i use tmpgenc with toolame for sound

the sound quality is just not good enough, especially the piano in the movies sounds horrible...

in tmpgenc there is 224 kbs and cannot be changed, right?

is there any other way to get a better sound? i dont mind sacrificing 200 kbs of video for a better sound...

    thanx!

  2. hi majkol,

what source are you encoding from? (especially the audio obviously)

I only ask 'cause if the source isn't that great, throwing extra bitrate at the audio won't improve things much.

I've always been quite impressed with tooLame's mp2's at 224kbps, but it's very subjective as to whether you think the compression leads to a big drop in audiable quality.

  4. majkol,

that's sort of what I meant; so you're not ripping from DVD?

If you're talking about encoding downloaded avi's (DivX, Xvid etc..), you're not all that likely to improve the sound.

The sound on a lot of DivX's is mp3 (or maybe ac3) - and is often not that great in the first place.

How do your avi's sound before encoding? You're not going to be able to improve it much from there, aside from the volume/level.

One thing to watch out for is that you normalise the wav, and preferably before encoding with tooLame. If the source is quiet (which it often is with downloaded avi's), that will obviously make it sound worse, and give tooLame less of a chance to do a good job on the compression.

do you have any audio editors? e.g. Soundforge, Goldwave, CoolEdit etc..

    cheers,
    mcdruid.

  5. Hi,

You can always change the audio bitrate in TMPGenc unless you used one of their templates. In that case select load for a new template an load the "unlock" template in the extras directory. Nothing is changed in the setting, everything is just changable this way

  6. i think i know whats the problem: Xvid (again )

yes, with divx works ok, but with xvid not only the jerkiness, now also the audio is bad(not so bad that you cant watch it, but worse than divx's)

maybe just with this xvid(btw.. the ring:0) tho... it has ac3 sound and originally was very quiet but i changed that in goldwave

druid: i know i cant improve the sound, it can only get worse, but this time it was too bad

psycho: thanx, might try it, but i dont think so few more kbs will help
