  1. i have a Sapphire All in wonder 9700 pro card

im using the software in " ATI multimedia center " to capture my old tapes on to the cpu.

and the result is a 4GB+ mpeg file ( 1hour 30 minutes movie ) when capture is done.I dont want to comprimise on the quality.
Seen files at the same lenght at 1.2 GB or much less .
any reply regarding other programmes or step by step how to do this - is much appreciated.

i suggest using dvd2avi, to get an avi file, using the divx codec provided in the program, or another way would e to just conevert using tmpgenc, cause after you convert it, you will get the right file size automatically...holla back on this topic

If you don't want to compromise on quality then I imagine you're buggered.
The whole ethos to what you are doing is sacrificing quality to fit within a certain size contraint.
For example, if you were creating a single mpeg for SVCD you would calculate the encoding to fit on a 700mb disk or, if like me you create DVD you would set the encoding bitrate to reflect a final output size of 4.3gb.
If you want a smaller file size reduce the quality of your mpeg.

  4. thanks for the replies on this subject

looks like i " overlooked "m that you actually can tweak and choose other file types to capture movies with - in the " ATI multimedia center " options. I still need to check what codec or file type wich get the best results. i have compressed it to a 1.3 GB file now but still get the feeling that the file can get smaller and better quality out of it.

    any suggetsions there maybe ?

What do you mean you are compressing it to 1.3gb, what did you use, what program?
