  1. It seems to be an increase in the "I have matrix reloaded and I can't convert it". A lot of this has to do with newbies. In a few instances the person wrote that they hope they don't get in trouble on the site because they are requesting information on an unreleased movie, which tells me that they know full well that they are doing wrong....anyway, is there a way you could put something on the "post a new topic" about not putting the names of the movie in the thread. They may not be able to make the mental translation from "warez" to pirated movie.

    @Tommyknocker: Agreed

@macleod: Sorry bud, but I'm going to get all George Carlin on you...

No means no. What you have suggested is a bad as calling rape an "involuntary sexual activity." No bootlegs at all. This site will not try to whitewash illegal activity. It will not avoid things or make up new euphamisms. Baldrick has made that clear. There is no discussion of bootlegs. We will not hold hands of lazy newbies that either do not or cannot read.

If anything, all post forms should have a reminder on top that says "Remember: Discussing warez and bootlegs is illegal. Do not do it on this site. Otherwise you will be banned and the topic removed by our mods."

But again, that may be overkill. We shouldn't have to cater to idiots.
I'm not online anymore. Ask BALDRICK, LORDSMURF or SATSTORM for help. PM's are ignored.

well, everytime you want to post, at the top it says:

Before you reply, please observe our following forum rules

    Do NOT give warez.

Do NOT link to warez .

    Do NOT ask for warez.

Do NOT provide information how to obtain warez.

    Do NOT advocate warez.

  5. conquest10. Thank you. It seems that the other two posters took my suggestion and did I have no idea what with it.

From what conquest10 wrote, I am guessing that he got the jist of where I was going. What I was trying to say is that a lot of people, it seems to be newbies, cannot make the connection between the word warez and converting matrix reloaded.

If you make it clear that warez DOES mean unreleased movies, then that may help. Of course, how many of the posters actually read the section about warez in the first place. That is a more interesting question.

TXpharoah, you work in law (and while this attempt and an analogy has nothing to do with your area of practice, it was covered in my law classes 8) ), there is a reason why the top of the ladder says do not step on this rung...

I can appreciate your wanting to take the high road and say that bootlegs and illegal copies, etc. are wrong and will not be tolerated, etc. on this site, but certainly something could be placed on the main site that could curtail these type of posts.

Do I need to get all "padawonie" on you (I hope you take this the right way. Some of your arguments with whats his name are legendary).

    @macleod -

I have to say, your first post wasn't as clear as your second. I could see an amendment to the rules that says "Warez includes bootleg movies".

    @Txpharoah -

I have to disagree with you - the people on this site whitewash illegal activity hundreds of times a day. The only difference between the statements

"I'm having trouble backing up XXX" and
"I'm having trouble backing up XXX that I rented"

is the first statement is not obviously illegal, so we assume positive intent. And we jump all over the second guy.

So by a gentlemen's agreement of sorts - "don't tell me where you got it, just ask the technical question" - a tactful omission, we avoid the appearance of impropriety.

I'm not saying I'm against this - far from it. I don't want to have Baldrick exposed to trouble, I don't want to see this site shut down or blunted, and I think that most noobs that come on here asking "where do I d/l Bruce Almighty" deserve to be shut down.

But let's see how many users are using Maestro, shall we, then compare that with the number of copies actually shipped by Spruce? How many of them "don't have the manual"? We do it EVERY DAY.

I think it would be good to include a definition of Warez in the rules. From reading the posts it's obvious that some people don't know what Warez means.

You're right, there's always a few that won't read no matter what you do to make it obvious. At least if the message is there in language that everyone understands then there's no excuses.

This is the only reason I even report threads concerning warez. We're not too far away from each other in this respect. This site is too valuable to too many people. Yes, even I meet people here on ocassion, and have learned a bit myself.

That is true for the most part, however, I have seen some posts where the person wrote that they know that it is wrong....in so many words.

I just think that overall, a statement CLEARLY saying that bootlegs copyrighted, rented, library obtained, friend obtained, etc. should not be discussed. This will prevent "misunderstandings".

As with TXpharoah, I really enjoy this site (especially after a certain someone decided to leave). I have learned A LOT from the site and I dont think that I would be anywhere close to where I am with video stuff if it were not for the site. I do not want to see it closed down or otherwise tarnished. I spend a good deal of time on this hobby and come to the site several times a day.

I have been interested in becoming a mod for the site and Baldrick has an open invitation from one of his posts that if you make a sticky, you can become a mod. I think I will right something up about this and submit it.

  12. I agree that the rules should be changed to something like this:

Before you reply, please observe our following forum rules

    Do NOT give warez.

Do NOT link to warez .

    Do NOT ask for warez.

Do NOT provide information how to obtain warez.

    Do NOT advocate warez.

    This INCLUDES pirated movies!

This also brings me to another point. Why don't new users undertake a test before being able to post. This may sound strange and even a little weird but after they click 'Ok' as to whether or not they accept the rules and terms etc when they join, the next screen quizes them on what they have learned. That way if they just skipped it they will fail the test and have to go back and read the rules again.

    Simple true/false questions like:

I am allowed to talk about pirated movies I downloaded off Kazaa? T/F

I need a serial for my copy that a mate gave me of CCE. I am allowed to post this? T/F

Comments on this idea? Just something I was thinking of to better make new users learn the rules.

that's not a bad idea. hit 'em with 10 questions, at the very least it means they had to interact with the rules, not just read them...

  14. Just wondering, is it possible to ban a user for a certain time period? Thinking that a system like this could occur if a user is troublesome:

    1st offence: Warning
2nd offence: 48 (maybe 72 hours even) ban
    3rd offence: IP Ban

  15. Would it not be better to set up moderation for new posters?

Say the first 10 post are sent for moderation BEFORE they get posted, that way you could filter most of the rubbish.

Or is this just TOO big an overhead, as in how many moderators are there

    Just my 2c

I'd say it should be more like this:

    1st offence: Warning
    2nd offence: IP Ban

If we warn you once and you do it again, then it's obvious you're not gonna follow the rules.

As for the first 10 posts going through moderation, I don't think there is enough time in the day to do that. 100s of people join every day, we would spend more time reading through posts than we would helping the honest forum posters.

Added Warez includes pirate/bootleg movies. But i'm not sure if it will help that much.

Time limited bans is not possible with phpbb2(I could make an own hack but it is too much work). Moderate posts is too much work also....

But maybe a test...it is easy to add and should force them to read and understand the basic rules.

What is wrong with the way it is set up now? Try to get info on warez, you get warned, try again you get banned? How many time do you have to put your hand in the fire to realize it burns?
