Where/when do you get a blank screen? I get the impression that the mpeg TMPGEnc produces shows no video when viewed on your computer. Then there's no point in authoring it to a VCD - matters will not improve.
It seems like the encoding of the AVI is something TMPGEnc cannot decode. Try opening the AVI in VirtualDub. If it looks OK, then frame serve to TMPGEnc.

Then surely your computer can't handle de encoding used in the AVI. Use GSpot (see Tools) to see what codec's used in the AVI. Then install/update those codecs. If it's an XviD, ffdshow might be needed too.
Come to think of it - what is your source material?

this is what i do..i download from kazzaa
i can then view them on my computer
i then open TMPGEnc load the file it encodes blank
    never did this before
some files i get down will not work in TMPGEnc so i have to use
winmpg and convert them to all avi
then encode but lately when i do that all the movies are upside down
so i have to problems no
was told to get ffdshow and click on flip but it dont flip it
this gspot did something but i dont know what ?
    this is so hard

GSpot doesn't do anything - it just tells you the innards of the AVI, and if your computer can handle the particular AVI or not.
Since you d/l from KaZaA, there's no telling what quality you can expect, if it's OK at all. The upside down problem is due to some (conflicting) settings in the codec/s used when decoding it.

  9. When you load the avi in gspot it will tell you what codecs are needed to decompress the film. If you don't have the proper ones installed it will tell so. You will then have to download whatever codecs are needed to encode the film. If you downloaded the film from Kazaa chances are it is an xvid film (uses an xvid codec).

  10. lijoda in Tmpgenc goto environment and under options select Vfapi plugin
Check that you have the Direct Show multimedia at a priority of 4.
I would advise checking you have the Divx 3, 4 and 5 codecs installed and also install the direct show filters found here

    http://www.doom9.org/Soft21/Filters/ffdshow-20021213.exe

Tmpgenc wont work properly on Divx without these filters.

If you dont have the Divx codecs they can been found here http://www.divx-digest.com/software/divxcodec.html
