vhs-dvd capture settings in videostudio7

I have been experimenting with capturing, editting and authoring using video studio 7. I have tried several different capture settings but the final dvd is not great. The best capture settings I have found are Frame size 352x480, Speed/Quality bar at 99%, Video data rate at 4500kpbs, 29.97 Frame rate, Field order A and MPEG 2. This has given me a watchable picture from my dvd but the picture is shaky at times. If you increase the playback speed on the dvd player the picture seems to be smoother which would suggest to me a frame rate problem but I can't seem to get the proper setting. I am capturing from vhs and I have an ATI 8500DV video card. Pentium 4, 2.4 ghz, 512 mb ram. Any suggestions? Thanks

4500kpbs that's the highest your program will allow you to go. I think you might want to look into a diffrent program that can handle a higher bitrate.

What bit rate would you recommend? Should I be capturing as mpeg2?

At 352x480 you should be able to get very good results at less than 3000 (I usually use 2700 in TMPGenc). Where is your source coming from; did you vidcam it or is it coming from VCR or Satellite? If the original is poor quality then you will have problems (GIGO).

I'd capture as an MPEG-2 to with a CBR of around 6000kpbs
