  1. Hi to all....
First of all please excuse my poor english. I live in Greece...
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm curentlly using my pc to capture dv avi (through firewire) from my dv camcorder and then encode it to mpeg2 with Canopus procoder (highest quality, 8500Bps, vbr).

I was wondering if some standalone dvd recorders (in BEST QUALITY MODE) with firewire input could produce better quality than the one i get now. I was thinking about the new Sony GX7 or some others (i accept recommendations )

I know the ups and downs of each machine (like editing for the pc dvd-r etc) but since i own a pc dvd-r and i am only concerned about quality i would like to know which one is better.

    Thank you in advance

If you're talking about a set top DVD recorder, then my opinion is no, you will not get better quality. In fact, you'll get worse.
The encoders in those units must encode on the fly, w/o taking the time to look at what it's encoding.

I own the Pioneer DVR-7000, and also an A-03 computer DVD burner.

The 7000 is not too bad, but I notice a lot of pixelation in finely detailed shots (like leaves) and also in high motion scenes.

Also, these units can only make the same, generic menu over and over.

The advantage to using one of these is convenience, not quality.
    I don't have a bad attitude...

First of all thanks for your reply!!!!

The pixelation you see is in the HIGHEST QUALITY SETTING? (XP or something like that)

Is 2 pass VBR canopus procoder encoding better than sony's , panasonic etc set up dvd recorders????

I am asking because sometimes in dark scenes of my dv videos when there are encoded with procoder i can see some pixels in the background (hard to see but they are still there).

I was wondering what is the B E S T way to encode DV AVI to mpeg2 for dvd burn.... Should i use a different encoder??? That's why i asked for the set up recorders

The pixelation is at ALL quality settings, at least on the Pioneer DVR-7000. I can't speak for the Panasonic or other madels since I don't have them, but my guess is they are the same (mine cost about twice what the Panasonics cost).

You can do a search for any of the software encoders on this site and get peoples opinions on them, they've been written about many, many times.
