  1. This is the size of the file that I got after capturing a 90 minutes Hi8 home video tape
    from my camera.

I used Sonic MyDVD software to author the DVD, but a DVD fits only 60 minutes of DVD
    quality video (4.3GB).

Is there any way to shrink the 5GB MPEG file to make it fit into the 4.3GB DVD?
or at least, instead of burning it into the DVD, perhaps I could send the DVD
files to the hard drive and once in there I could use InstantCopy to shrink the 5GB files
to make it fit into a DVD?

Can you please give me some ideas?

    Thank you.

There ar eloads of things you can do to get round this.

First you could re-encode the MPEG using as an example TMPEnc or CCE and get a smaller file by reducing the quality.

The easiest would be to use DVD authoring software that will let you write the "DVD" to disk first. Then use a program like DVD2ONE in full disk mode and it will squash your virtual DVD to fit onto a DVDR.

Be warned though any of these methods will result in a loss of quality. (Probably not noticeable)

You may not even have to compromise on the video quality. MyDVD defaults to LPCM sound, which is wonderfully compliant, but does not use compression. Using another package that allows MPEG1 Layer2 (not as universally compliant) or AC3 (just as compliant, but supported by less authoring software).

Have a gander at some of the authoring guides on this site for some ideas.
The glass is neither half-full, nor half-empty.
It is simply twice as big as it needs to be.

  4. I guess the esiest thing to do is to create the MPEG files of 60 minutes and use MyDVD to burn them. Don't you think? Because I don't want to compromise the quality of the video, since it is Hi8 video, more degradation to the video is not acceptable to me.

By the way, what PCI capture card do you guys recommend for inputing the video from the Hi8 camera to the computer? I tried the ATI Wonder 9700 Pro but I don't like it as my main card on my system. I just want a capture card only.

    Thanks for your info.
