  1. Hi,

I need to add about 30 seconds to the beginning of a mpeg 2 file. Will Qucktime pro work for this?

If not what are my options, running os10.1.4

    Thanks, Jerry

  2. to edit MPEG-2 with quicktime, you'll need to buy the quicktime MPEG-2 codec from apple. there may also be 3rd party solutions, but i havne't heard of or tried any yet.

you can just use a mpeg splitter/joiner like mpgtxwrap or something.

Simply select the .mpeg you want to add to the beginning, then select your mpeg2 for the rest. Click JOIN, then start and sit back and watch the % increase. DONE!

or, if you are making a svcd, just add more than a single mpeg file to your image, they will automatically play in the order you added them into the image.

    Enjoy!

The Quicktime MPEG 2 decoder only lets you view mpeg2 video (and not very well at that, VLC is much better, and free), not edit it. I don't know of any mpeg 2 editing solution besides the crude method proposed by galactica.
I like systems, their application excepted. (George Sand, translated from French), "J'aime beaucoup les systèmes, le cas d'application excepté."

  5. Well, .... Quicktime Pro with Mpeg2 Codec is a nice tool to bring video and audio in snyc (I'm talking of a sync hole of about a few frames like in captured sources, not the 23,97 and 29,97 sync problem! I'll explain it below)..... but there are no options of cutting etc. like you can do with Mjpeg codecs etc.

That's because MPEG gots a totally differend structure like mjpeg codecs!
A Mpeg gots Group of Pictures called GOPs with "I","B" and "P" frames, and it's GOP structures, for example "IBPPBPPBBP"

Mpeg Cutters and joining app's are only useful if you have a correctly encoded mpeg2-source. If you just cut a m2v in the middle it can happen that the 2part won't start or even play correctly.
But if the Source is encoded correctly with the "Closed GOP" option or "Header at every Gop" it can work!
That's why many users have problems with their encoded SVCD mpeg2's if they are encoded as 1 file . If the options are set as mentioned above you can split it, but if not ..... and you did not set a sequence header there's only a way using a PC application to set sequence headers after encoding.
FFmpgX sets a sequence header when chossing "splitting into 2 chunks".

    PS: Syncing with QuicktimePro:

If you have a M2V and a MP2 you first have to convert the MP2 into a format QT understands.
    - Open the M2V with QT
    - Open the Audio with QT
    - Copy the whole Audio in the Audiowindow
    - Go into the M2V window, choose the whole movie range and choose "add scaled" to add the audio correctly.

Now play the movie and you hear and see ... at the movie end, the audio ends correctly with the video track.

    - Now choose export from the QT menue and choose AIFF (44.1 for SVCD and 48 for DVD)
    - Encode the exported AIFF to mp2 or AC3 again

This audio file now fits with the M2v to author to SVCD or DVD

Joining .m2vs can indeed bring problems with timecode etc - this is easily fixed using MPEGAppend. Quick and very reliable; never failed me yet. Even force-joined up to 5 .m2vs, had MPEGAppend work it's magic on the timecode and then imported them into DVD Studio Pro - no problems whatsoever. Just thought I'd mention it

  7. Correct!

MPEG Append is a very useful appl. for that and it's fast!

But the OSx Version is commercial and if you wanna still use a no-cost posibility then use "Bits" option in More Missing Tools from RNCs Website.
Its a little slower but still free!
It also corrects the continous Timecode information in appended mpgs.
Or boot into OS9 and still use the free version of MPEG Append. (Thats what I do)

Also there is a appl. called "PulldownX"! Very useful to set a Pulldownflag afterwise and to change a lot of header settings of a mpeg file!

  8. Hi,

Does mpeg append join mpeg files or correct syn problems? I'm still trying to locate a program that will join the two mpeg2 files I have. Thanks for the help.

mpgtxwrap will split/join more or less any mpg1/2 files however you want them done. You can even feed it files with audio, and all the resulting (splitted) segments will still sync. Dont be fooled by the program automatically renaming the segments to have the suffix ".m2v" etc; if there was audio in the source there is audio in the target. Just rename it back to ".mpg" and you're set

In combination with the excellent (and rather fast!) MPEGAppend, I have no sync problems today.
