Please don't refer me to another post, I can't find it. In the settings, whats the difference between encoding in low quality, normal quality, or high quality etc? Which setting is best, and which setting is acceptable. It would be very helpful. Aloha,

Personally I use the "Slow" mode (presumably the second to highest quality). "Slowest" doesn't seem to help visual quality much more (especially in 12j). "Slow" is vastly superior to "Normal" and the others IMO.

TMPGEnc's preview window lets you see how good the quality comes out as you're encoding (it's especially good to see how the "blockiness" is apparent).
Depending on your source material I would say MSA settings vary. I find that bad quality material tends to come out a LOT worse using the "fastest|lowest quality" settings. However with good source material I find even under "fastest|lowest quality" MSA, the quality matches well with the source and blockiness less noticeable (there is a big difference here to see how much blockiness is seen comparing different source material).
Although someone could point out something different, I will say experimentation is your best teacher! -
I find the normal setting gives me a pretty good dvd rip. I can't stand the waiting for that little bit of extra quality, so normal it is for me. I just use the TIbrO VideoCD templete, and rip at the normal quality setting. I find the quality as good as 90 percent of the VCDs I trade. I also did notice that the better the DVD quality, the better the rip is, but thats a given.
Does motion search produce a good rip?
