I have a JVC dvd changer which plays pretty much anything that I throw at it. It will play mp3's off a cd-r, but I want to be able to put a large amount of mp3's on a dvd and just hit random play. I have tried just burning them to the disc in standard data mode but the player won't recognize the disc. I know this has been asked before, but I was wondering if anybody has had success. Even if I need to convert the audio files to 48khz ac3 I will gladly do it, but I am looking for a way to do it to a large amount of files at once. Any help would be appreciated.

This CANNOT be achieved yet with 99% of DVD players. The only one that can do this that I know of is the Koss DVP2165. I would hope that new players will start to have this feature

I realize that my player will not play mp3's when burned in data format. I am hoping that the audio files could be put on a dvd within a standard dvd structure somehow. Basically, can I convert the audio to something more friendly to a dvd player and put converted files into a videots or audiots folder?

Try this thread:

Also, I asked if anyone was making a portable DVD MP3 player and got an interesting response in this thread (look for the ebay link near the bottom):

And happy 100th post to me! -
Make a DVD-Video, but have menu items point to audio only. Not all links have to have video AND audio, just one of them. I do that for my audio discs with DVDit! PE. Just drop the MP2/WAV files into the menu link, and it'll convert to AC3 (if conversion enabled in options). Great discs.
I'm not online anymore. Ask BALDRICK, LORDSMURF or SATSTORM for help. PM's are ignored. -
This is an interesting subject.
I have placed 820 MP3 files in a folder then burn in data mode DVD. My DVD player will play all for them fine. It seems more related to the player than the technical.
The idea of making a video DVD with a menu and audio only is different.
What would I see on the screen if no video is present? Will you still see the menu? I take it you would have to convert to AC3.

K2,
You said that you put 800+ mp3's in a folder and your player played it? What type of dvd player do you have? I tried the same thing but I just burned all of the mp3's on the root of the dvd with no folder and that did not work. [/quote] -

Just bought it at Best Buy mere hours ago - plays MP3s on DVD! -
My Norcent DP-300 plays MP3's on DVD-R/RW disks.
They have it for $49.99 ($39.99 after $10 MIR) at Amazon.com
My unit is an older 1MB firmware model. It may be best to check the forums at Nerd-Out to make sure newer models have this capability as well. -
This topic was an interest to me back in 2000. 3 1/2 years later things have changed and this site proves it all. I bougth a SCSII DVR-S201 back in late 1999. That was the time that everyone really started getting into mp3s. However, at time no one really knew about DVD writers either. It was very difficult for me to get help on this subject since less then 0.2% of the average US consumer population had DVD writer. I worked with some music engineering guys and made some suggestions on formats. The best I could do at the time was to work on 5.1 music files. Now 5.1 music files are changing the tides for industry standard. They are actually manufacturing the players to play them. However, we were building tracks that fooled the player into thinking that disk met DVD compliance. I was on the left field of where that 40 cds on DVD was. As far as MP3s I threw about 4 gigs worth of music into that $50 blank disk and nothing. There was no software to help me simulate how the disk would react with the content. This became costly and I haven't touched that issue since after 3 months of trying. I do know this is not a DVD player issue for a fact. I tested my media on over 62 players including HK imports. I since had concentrated my efforts on 5.1 music. The effort in doing this is not worth it unless one has a portable DVD player. If you want to play any music through that DVD make sure you get the best out of the player. The MP3 quality will not do it, but still an interesting topic to pursue.

Allow me to beat a personal dead horse here...
BigFeat: "The MP3 quality will not do it"
For driving around especially -- whether in-town or on a long trip -- mp3s are fine. I salivate at the idea of putting most of my CD collection on two little $1.00 Ritek/DupEz/etc. DVDs that I could just leave in my car and not worry about the heat, or getting broken into, or leaving my favorite CD back at the house. No more clutter in my glove compartment, either. And no worrying about losing a $400 iPod, if a portable DVD player were reasonably priced (under $100). CD MP3 players are down to about $50 - I would gladly spend another $30 or $40 for a DVD MP3 player.
Heck, I'm thinking about buying another $50 Mintek 1600 and rigging it to run off the cigarette lighter and hooking up the rca audio outs to a tape adapter -- White trash car stereo! (raises thumb in Clinton-esque gesture)
By the way, SergeantD -- just to remind you, the Koss is not the only standalone that will play DVD MP3s -- my cheap little Mintek does it as well (pride before the fall -- watch how my Mintek will quit working tonight!)
Anyway, thanks for letting me ramble on yet again about this same topic! -
"White trash car stereo!"
I bought my Mintek 2110 15 months ago($90USD) and it's still going strong,plays mp3's on DVD,48khz audio on CD,even has microphone(or electric guitar)jacks and the features on the remote are amazing(pitch,volume,disk digest,jpeg menus).Too bad it's discontinued. -
MOVIEGEEK--
I gotta say, that Mintek pitch control is the COOLEST f***in' thing I've ever seen in a DVD player -- plus it's a great new way to annoy my wife! -
It's not that far off from about 9 different players I ran into about 5 years ago when I was in Hong Kong. They still produce several players like that. Region free players w/ the Karaoke perks are rampant in the streets of HK. The prices are great. The closest thing I found to that in the states was the Apex w/ Karaoke which had the Region free loophole hack through the remote control. Circuit City recalled all the units and had that loophole blocked. That was about 3-4 years ago. Portable DVD players are as cheap as $180USD overseas, but it'll be a while before US manufacturers decide to let the average consumer save some money on the DVD craze. But again, I still think that the MP3 format has met it's challenges and audio phreaks like me will always be in search of higher quality sound.

I had an Apex-5131 that recently died and got a new one (thanks to a 3 year warranty from CC, I've gotten 2 new players since then). For some reason the one I had previously wouldn't read DVD-ROM media, but the newer ones could! In fact this player had so much more than the previous model (it's the same model but a different firmware version most likely). Some posts in the past mentioned that this model can read MPEG files burned on a CD-R or DVD-R, this is true, but you could not fast foward or rewind, this is partially true. The new models can read *.mpg format straight off a CD-R or DVD-R AND can fast foward and rewind, with no need to convert to DVD-Video. I find this most useful without having to convert back and forth between DVD-Video and MPEG (also if you don't care much for menus). This compromises the need to edit right back to the computer, or just playing it straight off the DVD player.
