  4. Fav anime? Macross Plus.

Ninja Scroll was ok, but, MP beats everything else easily in my mind. I have a bookself full of anime video tapes, but only a couple dvds. MP is one of the dvds. Outstanding animation, story, and music. Nothing else has come close.

I've not converted any anime yet. Like I said, I do have a shelf full of tapes and I am sure I'll get around to converting some of them. Right now, I've got my hands full with old tv shows.

  9. Nausicaa: Valley of the Wind is a recent fav and project (selectable subtitles on SVCD are still kicking my ass), and anything else by Hayao Miyazaki (studio Ghibli for that matter). I saw it in first year college (1987) and recently got it on DVD.
    Happy to be here.

  10. : a style of animation originating in Japan that is characterized by stark colorful graphics depicting vibrant characters in action-filled plots often with fantastic or futuristic themes.

    Strait from the dictionary.

My Fav has to be Eva, its long but worth it if you put in the time. Actually the time seems to be the number 1 reason I can't get many people to watch it. After that I'd have to say Ghost in the shell movie, followed by El hazard OVA.

I don't watch it anymore. There is no longer an appeal...but at one time, there was. That would have been when I got into anime fandom c. 1978. That was fun for about 15 years. Then I just outgrew it and seldom watch any of it anymore. It was more fun as a cult sort of thing rather than now. But as to my fave characters:

    Lupin the 3rd
    Captain Harlock

    series:

many of the old Leiji Matsumoto series (Yamato, Harlock, GE 999) have a fond place, as well as Lupin the 3rd, FotNS, Gundam, were all good.

    Movies:

The Miyazaki films and stuff by Gainax among others. Akira was fun but way too short.

Out of the poll buttons I've chosen Akira, pretty good but not my outright favourite (tho I have trouble picking them). The ghibli massive are going to hurt me, but I like Laputa far too much

But then, I'm a bit out of sync with the rest of the world, any non-disney anifilm newer than about '95 (with the exception of spriggan, mononoke and spirited away) has yet to properly register.. no time to watch things with any seriousness any more.

I heard that disney liked the idea of SA but weren't too impressed by how well it did even after the oscars (unsurprising, seeing as they have adhered to the Atari school of marketing with it), and so are going for an in-house live-action remake. It might end up a bit witch mountain, but I think they should extend it to all of ghibli and miyazakis films... mononoke would just look so cool, they could get zeta-jones and a few other welsh people in for laputa, and nausicaa and totoro would pose some interesting challenges for the tech set (and finally there'd be a decent vocal translation for N). And the car chase in Cagliostro could join the small pantheon of hollywood films that prove high speed and large engines aren't necessary for a good dose of entertainment.
And then onwards to cover a load of other anime bases.. whatever happened to the DBZ and Akira live actioners? etc.. they could build a whole empire on remaking previous films (eh? whaddya mean that's what they're already doing? i thought the "2" on the end of Jungle Book was a typo..)

    Ooops, rambling again..

Transformers the Movie for an honourary place.. and Battle Angel Alita as well, gets a vote, if only because it was the first proper anime film i saw (besides bits and pieces of akira, laputa on tv)... after winning it in a magazine competition

TV wise.. Cities of Gold counts surely and the hundred & one other series in a similar vein to it. Oddly they seem to have dropped off a lot recently in favour of shows about people making other things fight in arenas for their own entertainment 9_9 maybe they weren't macho enough. Nadia/Blue Water being one of the later ones, that i'm trying to find time to watch. And some thing that I got an ep of by mistake while hunting NBW called Asahi no Nadja (?) which seems very shoujo and primary coloured but with a slight edge of grit and perhaps a restart of the semi-literary genre (a basis in oliver twist, i think i taste.. maybe).

And as far as conversions go, after several slowly improving divx -> VCD attempts, I'm about to attempt my first experimental DVD rip, with castle of cagliostro - hopefully it's the one film I have on dvd where i can be guaranteed a low level of newbie interlace problems! ('simultaneously' to VCD and DivX.. well.. one at a time while keeping the vobs on hard drive)

The DBZ live film is a done deal. Fox went to Japan and got Toriyama's blessing on the project.

I'm about ready to start capping again after a long absense but it'll all be stuff from the North American airwaves. That's where I have been getting the most requests the past 2 years anyways...

My favorite at the moment is Inuyasha. I just watch whatever's on Cartoon Network, since I don't have the time to find stuff online and I'm too cheap to buy the DVDs.

I had to vote for DBZ cause my current fav was not listed. But, DBZ was and still is one of my top choices. My current favorite is "The Big O". It is a cross between Batman TAS (animation style) James Bond (gimmicks) and of course the old fashion Giant Robots. The story/plot is VERY intense to the effect of we, the fans, do not really know if we are watching a show about a city that lost it memories 40 years ago OR if we are watching a "Sim City" type of show run by some unseen force(s). You will have to check out this site, http://www.animejump.com/phpbb/viewforum.php?f=8 to get the low down on what is going on.

I do have to say that my very first anime was Star Blazers, aka Space Cruiser Yamato. It first came to my attention back in '78 and is still my all time favorite.

I just started capturing DBZ from TV but I had done some file encoding in the past of DBZ eps that I got off the 'net. I just use the old standard VCD template from TMPGEnc and everything turned out great!

Well then, what about "Battle of the Planets" that was a Japanese original that the Americans cut out all the violence from! G-Force, Seven-Zark-Seven and all that. Used to watch it years ago when I came home from school.

  19. Would have to say Ninja Scroll but I also liked Urukosukodoji (probably have not spelt that right). :P

What was the name of the anime which had a girl in red leather/latex as the main character, I think it was under the pioneer or jvc banner. Had a really groovy opening title theme.

Ghost in the Shell is good but can kiss my grits as far as best ever goes. I rate it because it inspired "The Matrix"

Go read the manga instead, they did a similar hack job to akira on the story, but at least they included some semblence of the proper ending this time.

I think the anime with the red PVC clad femborg was probably Armitage III. Often seen about, never watched :/
The Big O neither, I wanna see that but can't be arsed downloading it, will probably root out in 10 years time when anime is finally rentable. Giant Robots and memory loss are always a cool combination (mmm... wind of amnesia ... Xenogears ), but it has been described as "GTA" - Grand Theft Animation, of Batman's unique style... hehe. But then that's a good thing, seeing as you can't get a knife between 80% of anime producers drawing styles, it's a bit like modern car design.. one lot does triangular lights, they all do triangular lights, one lot makes big stretchey curved oblong lights, they all do big stre... etc. Except for a few that either are out on their own stylistically (Caterham Super 7), or form a tight knit group with a different but internally similar style (all those nuts who put the turn signals on the INSIDE edge of the headlamps, so they can't be seen from the side). Blah.

-Hurts person who chooses DBZ as a favourite-
I don't like questioning other people's tastes and choices as a whole, but... come on... what kind of hole are you living in Go look and surely you'll find something better, unless you don't think wrestling is faked.

  27. Favourite Animes:
    Tenchi Muyo (OVA)
    Onegai Teacher
    Evangelion
    Ranma
    El Hazard (OVA 1)

    First Encoded
    Escaflowne Movie
    then many,many AMVs

PS. For the Ghost in the Shell discussion - watch the TV series, GITS: Stand Alone Complex. It is great. It follows more the manga story arc and has great opening and closing music (opening sung in russian I think and closing in english!)

I wonder if Bebop lands in the serious group or the funny group?
Hmm, a GitS TV series now?

AMVs rule. Wierd that I've probably discovered more bands thru them than MP3. Must be the visuals selling the music, even though they've got no real connection other than in some Premiere Pirate's warped mind

OMG, how can I forget about Bebop..

By the way, I love the Dragonball series, even though it can be boring sometimes, Its a thing I've loved since childhood. So what if theres something better, I will love it to the end.
