forty-two generated DVD-R works on a Mac, not in DVD player

I used forty-two 1.5.2b to generate a "DVD" mode ISO disc image from a DVD-9 movie disc, which I then burned (after two coasters were generated by Toast ... grrr) in DiskCopy to a Memorex DVD-R disc ("General use Version 2.0").

The burned disc works fine in two different Macs I have handy - DVD Player comes right up and it plays OK. (Needless to say, I was pretty well chuffed by that in and of itself!)

However, I just put it into my Toshiba SD-3109 DVD player, and I get a grey screen with "Please check disk".

I noticed that the burned disc has only the "VIDEO_TS" folder on it.

Some other posters in other threads have implied that perhaps an empty "AUDIO_TS" folder is also needed for conventional DVD players to be able to play the discs (if it's not a problem with the DVD-R disc brand itself, which I suppose could also be my problem here).

Would it be too much trouble to ask for an empty "AUDIO_TS" folder to be added to the ISO image that forty-two creates when you choose the "DVD" option, just in case that is the problem with standard DVD players?

1) You give no indication if your Toshiba SD-3109 will play any burned DVDs. Have you tried any that work? Using the DVD Player (compatibility and user comments) option on the left side of the screen here, I noticed that for your machine there are some firmware upgrade and DVD-R vs. DVD+R issues. So that is the first hurdle.

2) Using Forty-Two to copy a DVD is probably only recommended for people whose time is worth much less than the cost of Disco+ or DVD2ONEX. After one leaves school and enters the real world, I find that my time is much more valuable that the reasonable amounts charged for these software tools.

I have used both Disco+ and DVD2ONEX to generate VIDEO_TS folders and, where necessary, manually added an empty AUDIO_TS folder and then copied these folders into the DVD option in Toast and I have never burned a coaster yet.

D'oh!@ Good point - I hadn't thought of that. I've had my SD-3109 for a few years, so I'm sure it doesn't have this magical firmware 2.4 version needed to play DVD-R discs. I found a phone number for Toshiba on another site ("If anyone [...] would like the upgrade DVD, call Toshiba at 1-800-631-3811. Be sure to press prompt #1 and then #3.") so I'll try calling them tomorrow ... thanks for the tip.

Agreed, but not really relevant in this case - I think the total wall clock time elapsed using forty-two to go end-to-end versus DVD Backup 1.3 and DVD2OneX would be pretty similar, if you ask me. (On the other hand, I couldn't get DiscoVOBulator+ to work at all, and forty-two stumbles badly if you have any spaces in any of the paths to your Destination folder, so maybe punting and using DVD2OneX is the best way to go anyway )

Be sure to post your firmware results on the DVD Players list for your specfic Toshiba...

G3 or G4 and how long did 42 take you? On my iMac G3 DV most movies take 1.5 hours for DVD2ONEX to process. I have not paid any attention to the time that DVDBackup takes, but since it is just a decrypt copy from DVD to disk, I assume that every program will take that long for that step. Of course a G4 will be much quicker. I found 42 on my G3 to take as much as 24 hours for a DVD and quickly dropped experimenting with it in that mode when Disco arrived on the scene.
