  1. I successfully burned a VCD using VCDEasy at a speed of about 48X. I tried playing this in two seperate DVD players and neither have worked. Will burning at fast speeds make the disc unreadable?? And if so, what speed is appropriate?? any help would be great...

  2. It has been suggested before that lower speeds should be used for S/VCD/CVD. Perhaps someone could explain why? . Personally I burn at 8x with no problems (no choice really, thats my burners max speed )

VCD and SVCD have no error checking when they burn. Now combine that with a $40 48x burner and 15 cent media and guess what you get? Errors, too many errors and the standalone player barfs.

So, many people swear that burning at 4x or 8x eliminates this problem. Personally, if I'm using cheap disks I burn slower (my burner is pretty reliable). Most of my on sale disks are only 16x anyway, so it doesn't matter much. Your talking what, 2 minutes more/disk? Not a big deal.

A good test is to verify after burning, it may suprise you. I had one batch of disks that never did verify, even at 4x burn for VCD/SVCD, although they play fine in a standalone. This problem would go a long way with all the people burning 1x DVDR's at 2x and complaining that the last 400 MB is bad.

Never burned a VCD over 8x that didn't have block pixelized patches

  5. Hi, I burned VCDs at 12x no problem, but with good ones, with cheap ones I tend to lower the speed to 8x or 4x.
    Some Day I will…..

  6. I have to agree. I have 2 burners in my system, a very old Yamaha 4x, and a new Liteon 24x. I've gone as high as 24x, but I noticed some pixcellation and other artifacts. Burning at 16x works just great. Most of the time I use my old slow burner at 4x since I'm not really in that much of a hurry. Another option might be to try different media until you find one that works at a decent speed.

I burn my SVCDs onto TDK CD-Rs at 40 speed without any problems. Takes 3mins on the dot.

  8. Same as above, I use Emtec 48x discs, burn at 40 speed and I have never had a problem.

Speed makes no difference if the burner and disc are good. If the disc or burner is bad, slowing down may help it. That means the disc or burner is just partially bad. Sometime, nothing you do will help, and a 1x burn will be bad.

It usually means your burner as going out or is bad. And it means you're using cheap discs.

A good disc on a good burner will be fine at the max speed.

As usual, you get what you pay for.

Yes, but some DVD players are more sensitive than others, regardless of cost.

    My practical advice:
For VCD/CVD/SVCD/x(S)VCD, I suggest to use only black CD-Rs.
Burn them 20X and you never gonna have a single problem with any DVD standalone player!

    Black, eh?
    Sounds Excellent!
I'm using an LG Combo Drive 12xmax and La Cie 16xmax
    cdr's for the job..they're new
and yet if I go faster than 12x, I get the blocks again..
Guess you need a better new drive to go faster than 8x for me -plextor or yamaha come to mind- , tho I'm using good PHILIPS media

Also I find a lotta difference in the burn program -VCD easy and Nero best, ez cd creator, good and Record now max only FAIR..
    NTI cd makerpro..useless
    DO OTHERS AGREE?

  13. Gazorgan,

How exactly does one verify after the burn. I see "test write" options in Nero and VCDEasy but no verify. Prassi Primo DVD has a verify function but I can not burn my XSVCD with it. Short of copying the data back from the disc what is the best way to verify?

I had an instance recently where a mini-DVD I burned played fine on my stand alone player (Sampo) but I could not recover all the data on my computer when I tried to extract from it.

I had some bad CDs from Maxell recently, a name-brand even!
