I'll tell you two things that probably everyone is gonna know and suggest you in this forum.
1st. The general rule is "Garbage in, garbage out".
-It means that if your source file is not satisfying to you, your final copy will not be any better
2nd. It is very hard to work with mpg files when it comes to editing, because they are considered to be a final copy, to be burned on cd-r or dvd-r, and also you won't find many mpg editing tools.
So if you want to experiment any further I would suggest that you encode the mpg to avi and then try using some freeware software from the tools section to edit the sound. Actually TMPGEnc has some basic sound and noise filter that you can use. But believe me, I and everyone else that I know have tried to do this and the results they get at the end are not much different. But if you have the time, it doen't cost you anything to try for yourself.
Just remember the first rule and you'll see that it's always true.
