  1. Hi peeps just come to pick some brains.I am just tryin to play back some standard Xvid/DivX formats on my PC but about ten mins after playback starts it starts to lose timing (slowly chops then speeds up to rectify.I tried to uninstall my codecs and download some new ones (job done) but the problem still persists .So i am wondering if anyone knows of a codec cleaner or software that might help out?, or advice on the subject would be great, thanx in advance

If they work properly in VLC, then likely your installed codecs are the problem. It's one way to check them. If you want to remove broken codecs, try Codec Sniper.

If it's not codecs and not the players, then maybe the source file or the source device, or the interface, may be where the problem lies. Software like some antivirus programs can slow down transfers. Or your drive may be full or need defragging.

There are a lot of possibilities, codec problems are just the most common. Rule out a few possibilities as the cause and work through what's left over till you find it.

If you have too many codecs installed on your system, you may be having a conflict. You might try uninstalling your codecs and reinstalling only the ones that you need.

  6. Right, well i tried VLC and it plays right but the audio is way out (like20 mins) so i can only come to the conclusion that its my machine, SO i am gonna uninstall all the codecs i can find (including any shown up by codec sniper) then frag the drive cos it is big and its been a while. After this is done can you recomend a pack to install? and i will come back to let you klnow how i get on, so whatch this thread.

Stay away from codec packs; they are nothing but problems (like you are having). You can look at your video file with G-Spot and it will tell you the codec that is used in the file. You can then install that particular codec and you should be able to play the video correctly.

Hopefully the codecs were all completly removed. They are much, much harder to remove completely than to install. And you want to be careful with Codec Sniper. It will also remove MS system codecs just as easy, and they can be difficult to re-install.

If you are playing back Xvid, then install that codec. Gspot, as mentioned, is one good way to see what codec is needed. One codec pack that is fairly safe is FFDShow. It should enable Xvid, Divx and some more common format playback. But even it can cause conflicts at times. You don't want to install it if you already have one of it's codecs in place.

If you have a single video with a 'odd' codec that you may very rarely use, that's a perfect use for VLC. If it plays the file, you won't have to install a codec and your system will be much cleaner.

  9. Took almost everything off, de fragged the drive (then i wouldnt play the Xvid) si i checked out the codec needed and stuck the sucker on and it played but with the same problem as before (five mins in and then ten mins of slow down spees up then everything fine). So i can only think the problem is being caused by a broken codec on my PC (codec sniper shows a number of em).The only way i can see of fixing it is to get rid of the broken ones, and my final question is how can i tell what i can delete and what i can't?.Is there a rule orguideline to stick to?,Any helps great cheers
