    I new to this stuff so I need help.I have a Sony DCR-HC47E and when I capture recordings using Sony Vegas I get an .AVI file.How to convert it into a format to burn on DVD and play it on a DVD player?Which software to use to remain good quality?

    You're at a "fork in the road" as they say. There are many options available to you. It just depends on your budget and ability/willingness to maybe learn some new software. This is what I would do. Others may post with different processes.

    Assuming I didn't need to do any editing, I would use AviSynth to "serve" my AVI file to HCEnc to produce a very nice DVD-compliant M2V file. Then using the same script, I could "serve" the audio stream of the AVI to BeHappy to produce an AC3 file. Then I would use GUI for dvdauthor to mux my M2V and AC3 files together. Slap on a quick-and-dirty menu, auto-create some chapter points, crack open a can of my favorite beverage, sit back and enjoy on the nearest TV.

    I tried with Super and it works fine ''on the fly'' both video and audio at the same time.I got an .VOB file.Can I burn it to dvd now?And which codec is the best to remain good quality,included in Super application?

    OR...Nox Li may not prefer a "one-click" option. The process I described presents no trouble...to me. Anyone's free to take it or leave it.

    @dfisher052
    Let's not forget that everyone is different. Let's not assume that simple always equals better.

    @Nox Li
    The fact that you ended up with a VOB file means the correct codec was used. A VOB file is a "wrapper" that can contain a number of video and audio streams, particularly one or more MPEG-2 video streams and at least one audio stream, either MP2 or AC3. Ideally you would let SUPER encode your AVI to a DVD-compliant MPG file and then have a free app like GUI for dvdauthor create a DVD structure that you can then burn to DVD.

    Hopefully what I've said isn't too much "trouble" for you.

    Ok,I understand you.But tell me,can I burn those VOB files straight to dvd,without that GUI for dvdauthoring,since I looked into files on a some dvd movie and it says that files are VOB?Which codec is the best to remain good quality that is included in Super software?And thanks,of course!

    Write yourself a list of all the VOB, IFO and BUP files that you have.

    Then click on the link "What Is... DVD" at the top left of this page - that has all the summarised information you need to know about the DVD specifications. Towards the bottom is a list explaining what VOB, IFO and BUP files are and which ones are on DVDs.

    Compare your list to that and make sure you have what you need to go ahead and burn.

    When changing (encoding) from an AVI to a DVD file, the codec is known as MPEG. There's two types that can go on a DVD: MPEG-1 and MPEG-2. MPEG-1 is lowest quality. MPEG-2 is the one that has larger resolutions (for clearer pictures) and higher bitrates (for better quality).

    If you encode to MPEG-2 at around 8,000kbps at full D1 resolution (720 x 576 for you in PAL land) and have WAV (uncompressed) audio, then you'll get an hour of excellent quality video on a single layer disc. However, you can compres the audio using either the AC3 or MP2 codecs to get a bit more video on.

    So, in SUPER, to get 1h 15m of video and audio on a disc using compressed audio, have the following settings:

    That will give you a DVD compliant MPG file. You need to author to get all the audio, video, menus etc. into the VOB files ready for burning. If SUPER does output VOB files, you also need other files (IFO etc.) to have all the files you need before burning.

    There are many ways of doing what you want to do, but ConvertXToDVD, as dfisher052 said, will be quick and easy - it will give you everything you need all in one go. Many people recommend it, so it must produce good enough results.

    I only have VOB files after encoding in Super,nothing else!
    But I've noticed that after encoding in VOB format,moving objects on recording get some debris,like small white lines around them while static are pretty good.Any idea what it is?

    Hey,I tried with the settings you recommended and it works!When encoded to MPG it has great quality and no more of that debris and white lines!It's compressed from 906MB to 182MB with no quality loss.Thank you very much!
    Now,can I burn these MPG files straight to dvd and can I watch it on a stand alone dvd player?

    It appears, until you become more confident with the apps, files & processes of DVD making,
    that Convertxtodvd is your best choice, at least just for now. (as has been mentioned)

    I know it's not freeware, but I can attest to it being a Very, Very good program.

    Oh.....Just a thought, what's the make & model of your "Stand-Alone" DVD Player?
    "Some" players are able to play "Some" Mpeg, AVI, ect, without authoring.

    You're going to have to author.

    There are many authoring apps - TDA has a 30 day free trial - well worth a try.

    I know it's a bit late now since your AVI has been converted, but for future reference take a look at QuEnc. It's free, accepts AVI as input, and has quick no-menu DVD authoring built in (in Advanced Options).

    It will also accept AVI input. When you click the "..." to browse for an input file, change the Files Of Type drop-down to AVI.

    I'm a little confused...what are doing in the other apps, that can't be done by feeding
    the original AVI into ConvertXtoDVD alone?
    (assuming unneeded pre-processing & ConvertXtoDVD is being used in concert
    with all the others)

    Seems like you've managed to reencode at least 3, possibly 4 times on your route from AVI to Video DVD. Is there any visual quality left?
