I have successfully converted full length movied from DVD to AVI with pocket DVD studio for palm, copied the file to 1G sd card and they play great. The play back on the Palm tungsten e2 is with TCPMP.
Thats the good news. I then tried the same thing with music video clips Mostly *.mpg files. The video is great but the audio sucks. It breaks up and is very crackly. I am setting the audio bitrate at 128k, the sampling rate 44khz and the video quality usually 500 and up, frame rate 15 or 20 This uaually shrinks a 120meg file to 25 -30meg. any suggestions? Or can you direct me to an area that specifically deals with this kind of operation?
Thanks
JT

use gspot to view the info of the source file
when converting set the frame rate at 1/2 of the source FPS is makes it easier to keep in sync which helps keep it from breaking up
make sure you match the audio sampling rate of the source.
and make sure you conversion prg converts the audio
many mpegs have vbr mp3 audio and the conversion program may not be converting it, just trying to sync it with the new frame rate
my phone's native camcorder audio is vorbis, but it plays mp3 music, but sound streams in the video must be vorbis or aac NOT mp3 -
Thanks for your reply! Theewizard.
I downloaded GSpot and here is what I found.
Bitrate.........................256kb
Sample rate.................48khz
Frames.........................29.97fps
Video...............................Mpeg-2 DeMultiplexer
Audio..............................AC3 Filter
In Pocket DVD Studio for Palm.
Closest bitrate = 44khz
Max Sample rate = 128kb
Closest 1/2 fps rate = 15
I found if I recorded at the lowest quality Sample rate 40kb It will play on the palm without breaking up but there is an annoying high pitched squeaking sound, and its a tad fuzzy.
I should mention that at 128kb it plays fine on the computer but at 40 kb it squeaks on both the palm and computer.
Three questions.....
could it be the sd card I am using? Kingston.
Can you recommend a program for converting the file for use on the palm? or failing that recommend a program to lower the sampling rate from 256kb to 126kb.
Could the palm's amount of memory be the problem?
Thanks

woops
reverse bitrate and sample rate numbers for pocket dvd studio numbers
and I found if I recorded at the lowest sample should read lowest bitrate -
what is the output container/file ext for the files that play on the palm
a good free program is Super, i use it for all my video to phpone conversions
which are output to 3g2, mpeg4 codec, bitrate 240k, audio AAC, 56k, 44k sampling, 320*240
you should be able to duplicate almost any set of ouput data-specs you need
also use gspot on one of the ripped movies that plays well
try to duplicate those settings for output when converting mpegs
pocket dvd may have default settings for converting vobs that are different than the default settings for converting mpegs ?
or maybe the mpeg codec used gives pocket dvd more trouble when transcoding -
The file extention from Pocket dvd studio is a double ext. actually.
"filename.pq.avi". The playback prgm on the e2 is TCPMP, as I said earlier it works great for dvd movies but not so hot for video clips. Now that I've played with Pocket dvd studio more I see that it wants to limit the bitrate rate to 40kbits. and the audio played with out problems, the quality just sucked LOL. They bill the program as being good for video clips but it seems to be mainly good for full length movies, at least with Palm pilot.
Thanks for all your help!

Anyone else who converts vid clips for their palm pilot that can help?
JT -
what info does gspot give you about the converted movies
video bit rate, codec, audio codec etc
perhaps super or another program can be used, with better results on transcoding the mpeg files
if you can duplicate the specs for output with another program then rename the file to have the double ext
do bad the player doesn't like higer audio bitrates 40k is pretty low, even for my phone i encoded at 56k audio -

heres a super screen shot, I don't have a palm to test the settings
but try these for a starting point, most AVI's have a 25 fps, the 20 fps form the conversion program is unusual
try 12.5 & 25 and see which works best on your palms display
try 48k on the audio, thats as low as super will go unless you choose
avi ( pocket pc ) from the main menu, but that only does mp3 sound in the video NOT AC3
TCPMP is a media player for embedded devices IE; PocketPC. It has built in codecs like mpeg4 video (XviD,DivX), mp3 (libmad), vorbis (Tremor) and supports third party plugins too (AAC). Primary platform is Windows CE on ARM devices.

your welcome
you might want to post your final settings, as help to next person -
These are the settings I used to convert music videos for use on my Palm Tungsten e2. If the fps were 25 the I would use 12.5You can adjust the bit rates up for higher quality and file size and down for lower.
Use gspot to asses your current values.
Set 1/2 the frame rate and be sure and match the sampling frequency the same.

get 'irfan view' whic is free or 'snagit' which is comercial
start irfan view, options, capture, this brings up the settings window
for the hot key combo and what to capture,
mine is set for complete foreground window ,
then minimize irfan view and run any app you want to run 'super'
make your settings then press the hotkeys mine are 'alt up'
the pic is taken and the irfan view window opens with the picture in
click saves as and choose location and name and type
there are lots of apps that to screen shots, super doesn't work for shots from player software using hardware overlays
for shots of videos to show quality or problems i use VLC, play pause and click snapshot from the menu
