Yes, some. The resolution will have to be changed and the whole thing re-encoded. There will be some quality cost to this. Will it be noticeable - that depends on how it is done.

Can I ask why you want to convert the format ?

Most PAL players can also play NTSC, either through conversion to a hybrid format sometimes called PAL60, or through native output of an NTSC signal. Most PAL televisions are multi-format, and will accept and display PAL and NTSC signals.

A number of major studios have chosen to release product on DVD in the NTSC format, rather than convert it for what may prove to be a small audience. The products are labeled clearly as NTSC format, but still sell.

So the question is really is there a commercial imperative to change the format that is worth the possible cost and quality impact (however slight) ?

We get quite a few magazines form the 'States with discs on them - never seen one that took the time to convert their cover discs to PAL. I cannot remember the last time I saw a player over here that couldn't play NTSC. So long as it is region free.

Did you author the original yourself ?

If so, with what tools ?

It may not be that difficult for you to do this yourself, if you did the original. This would save you not only money, but time and allow you to quality check it yourself.

With the software he has, he can encode it as pal if he selects it to do so. But I'm with the others who think he should leave it as ntsc, and make it region free.

lilquit - You are wasting your time and money to do this. Please pay attention to guns1inger's very good posts. Please also consider going to the following website:

Look up Brazil and Hong Kong and what do you see? PAL. I have NEVER seen a PAL DVD from Hong Kong. I have many and they are all NTSC. I have a handful of DVDs from Brazil of musical acts I like. Every single one of them without exception is in NTSC. These are DVD bought through Brazilian internet stores and all they have are NTSC versions. There are no PAL versions.

    Why?

It is because as guns1inger says, most of the world's DVD players can correctly play NTSC video. Brazil and Hong Kong do this so they can sell their DVDs all over the world. I've read that 95% of the world's DVD players can correctly play an NTSC DVD. You are wastng your time and money to convert a DVD that almost certainly would have been playable as NTSC, but it's your time and money to waste.
