  1. Hi,
    I'm looking into getting a DivX upconverting HDMI DVD Player for my new LCD TV I just bought. I was planning on getting the PHilips DVP5960 but it doesn't support resolutions greater than 720x576. Are there any other players out there which can? Thanks.

    Any good recommendations for a DivX/Xvid upconverting HDMI DVD player? I originally was looking at the Sony ones but it doesn't play Xvid!!

    What is the model number of your LCD TV? What is the native resolution?

    Commercial DVD native resolution is 720x480 or 720x576.

    A normal progressive DVD player has analog component outputs that should be set to 720x576p for that progressive set. The TV will upscale 720x576 to 1366x768.

    Three types of DVD can be played:

    * Commercial movie DVD - native 720x576p/24
    These are processed and played as progressive 720x576p/50

    * Home or commercial interlace DVD (as recorded in a DVD recorder) 352 or 720x576i/25
    These are the tough case for a DVD player. A premium player will have a good deinterlacer for 576i to 576p conversion. Cheap progressive players will blur the image with simple blends or bobs.

    * Divx/Xvid/other progressive MPeg4
    Accepted frame sizes and bitrates vary by player (see specs).

    Those are the basics. Other enhancements to consider if you have an HDMI input on you TV.

    An HDMI output on the player allows a digital 576p rather and analog component 576p connection. Any noticable difference would require a very high quality display ~42 inch or higher.

    Upscaling features in the player duplicate the upscaler in the TV. In your case, an upscaling DVD player would convert 576p to 1280x720p and output on HDMI. The HDTV would receive 1280x720p and then upscale that to 1366x768. The alternative is to let the TV upscale 720x576p to 1366x768 in one step.

    Before you spend money on the last two features, I suggest you get a demonstration on a similar 1366x768 LCD panel to see the difference in picture quality (if any).

    IMO you should direct the extra money to deinterlacer performance and MPeg4 features.
