So I borrowed this commercial DVD, which someone else purchased, and I converted it to SVCD.
The question occurred to me, is there a way to randomize playback of the main segment and "extras" so they play in different orders each time?

I'm not an expert but links within a DVD a very specific, no place for any randomization (that would req. a "group" link with a player deciding which one to play first). As well no randon play feature on DVD Players. I'd say NO.
I just read HOLISTIC'S link below and learned that I was wrong, sorry. That way we all learn...

Anything is possible .
You will of course need to locate copies of DVD Maestro , CCE & Sonic Scenarist THEN you need to get a copy of the movie in xvid format with VBR audio (that is best).
Convert to MPEG2 complaning about the quality loss and audio sync issues then demand an urgent response to your question.

I think it is possible. On the Jason X dvd there is a button which says "Random Kill", you click this and you are taken to one of the deaths in the film.
Not sure how it's done but it sorts of does what you want.

I know you could have a cute answer like ... this "someone else" is my wife or I only made the copy for them not for me to keep or it's a public domain disc etc.. but then why would you be baiting? You've been around a while so obviously know the rules and even if none of the rules turn out to be broken, based on the answers so far, you are leaving the impression that they are.
If you are baiting then a mod could decide that you are not serious with your question. If that's the case then this thread should at least be moved to the offtopic or even possibly locked and a warning issued until you explain yourself. I'm not a mod but you leave yourself open to these possibilities.(Please no flame war here I'm just trying to be helpful)

My dvd/vcd player has a random playback button if you have the scenes seperated into clips (easy mpg splitter) will handle that. It would play them randomly if I set it to play random so.... buy a new dvd player that will do this and save yourself some time.

OK, time to clear up the mystery.
There have been a number of people complainig about others bashing posters for suspected warez, sometimes on thin evidence. I was actually hoping to bring some of these people out of the woodwork.
It seems that perhaps they may be more interested in just plain noob bashing than assisting to make the site rules more clear, as none of these have jumped on this post so hard, presumably they are not so willing to bash a more experienced user.
My statement was in fact true, I did indeed copy a commercial, copyrighted DVD which I do not own. However, this act was ABSOLUTELY LEGAL. While this circumstance will certainly not be common, without more information it demonstrates what should not be assumed. The trick? I obtained permission to do so from the holder of the copyright. The disk was not encrypted.
The disk also appeared to utilize a randomized playback mode, encoded to the disk, and I was also interested in how this was acheived. Thanks to those who replied in this area. Though the information that Scenerist can do this does not help much due to its cost, confirmation that such a function is available in the DVD spec is indeed interesting. The disk in question consisted of multiple clips, several of which were similar and almost all mind-numbingly dull. It was difficult to determine for certain whether it was actually playing randomly.
Back to the main point, reminding noobs of the rules IMO is fine, however assumptions of illegality should be left to the mods, and/or bashing/namecalling should be minimized. There are lots of stupid questions much more deserving of this activity. Also, it seems this may be driven more to enforce a superiority complex than to actually help keep this site clean.

No one took your "bait" because it was so obvious. Instead of being a "champion for the little guy", you're merely a little prick.
When most warez-monkeys are flamed/bashed, they are pretty obvious. They name titles (usuall first-run movies), or even without naming specific titles, they ask about the warez group prefix on the avi that they downloaded.
Something about your story sounds a bit, ah, fabricated. If you indeed got the copyright holder's permission, said person should also be able to get you the information on how it was made. Sounds like a "what is your opinion if this happened?", rather than that this actually occured. I'm sure that most people asking have already gotten permission to illegally download "Return of the King" or "Kill Bill, Vol.2".
Leave everything to the mods? This is a discussion board. Not only do the mods ask for help (in a "report threads..." topic, among other places), but they've never advocated this fascist outlook that you speak of.
And BTW, your post suggests a superiority complex. Get off the soapbox. You seem to be the one wih the mod-complex.

I was not attempting to be anyone's champion. And in fact, several people expressed reasonable concern over the legality of my action. Which is exactly what should happen. Perhaps I made it too obvious, but I wished to keep strictly to the facts.
I think it is obvious that the tone of the responses here did not rise to the level of many of the anti-noob posts. My main goal in stating this unusual set of events was to point out what MIGHT be possible, and that the seemingly obvious conclusion might not be the case.
Whether you believe the facts as I have stated or not, I could care less. Should a mod or anyone with the authority to do so request it, proof can be provided.
Sure, many of the noobs make it obvious. However, some do not, and a few are engaged in legitimate endeavors and have been unfairly bashed for it. A polite reminder is one thing, unfounded accusations and name-calling are not.
IMO, I was attempting to restore some civility to this board. If one basher thinks twice before going off on some possibly innocent noob, mission accomplished.
I was one of a few people who pointed out that the original definition of "warez" on this site did not actually include downloaded movies. I do not seek "credit" or "points" for attempting to improve or better this environment, just hope to nudge it in a more positive direction.

If you don't like stupid questions about "how can I convert my downloaded xvid to vcd" don't answer them.

Who gave you the authority to bait anybody into breaking the site rules? Is there a moderator that would like to come forward and take credit for this experiment, or does Nelson get all the credit for this?
You sit here and profess to say it's the moderators job to administer justice, and then you purposely try to bait people into a flame war so you can reinforce a personal belief. Who was your target, Nelson? I noticed, like some other spineless bastards on this forum, you have chosen not to name names. And then you have the audacity to complain about others pushing a superiority complex?!
If you don't like the way the noobie bashing is being handled, piss off! It's not your job to decide what constitutes bashing, and it sure as hell isn't your right to try and get others in trouble to prove a point. Thank God I didn't post that Indolikaa Special I wrote last night in response to your question, I'd have gotten a formal warning for it. And all so you could preach from your soapbox and tell the rest of the forum what they're doing wrong?
Take your ******* 'superiority complex' theory and shove it straight up your ass, Nelson.

If you want to bash, express an opinion, whatever, I could care less. I am not attempting to limit or define anyone's freedom or responsibility.
The number of people complaining about the activity I mentioned, and others engaging in it, made it obvious to me this was a point of general interest. If you haven't seen the posts, go look for them. They are there for all to see, and recently, too. I have no complaint with any specific individual, nor any need to point specific fingers.
It is when someone is called a thief and a criminal without certain evidence that I think a line is crossed. If this is a unique personal opinion, so be it.
I felt I had an oppurtunity to state a factual occurrence which demonstrates possibilities which many do not take into account. For those who wish to civilly debate this issue, have at it. For those whose only interest is pointless accusation and name-calling, blow it up your elbow.

I'm not stupid, Nelson. I can read between the lines. You're concerned about the same individuals engaging in this behavior time and again.

I would say "spineless bastard" is a CLEAR example of pointless name-calling.
I would also characterize anonymously running to the mods "chickenshit" as opposed to directly confronting someone calling me a thief, and making it glaringly obvious what their error was.
When an action is perfromed by SEVERAL people (not one or two), and then complained about by SEVERAL people (not one or two), how do you interpret a concern about this as a concern about specific people? I don't even remember who they were, there were enough of these statements that I took it as a GENERAL, NON-specific issue.
Why are you telling me what my motives and/or goals are? That's some crystal ball you got there. It is you who are telling me what my rights are or are not, yet you accuse me of attempting to dictate policy.
