Magix has a product called MAGIX Movies on CD & DVD. One of its features makes it easy for a user to backup a DVD from a player to a PC and easily recreate menus. It has always been possible to do an analog copy; there's nothing new about that. The difference with this product is that it makes the full process simple enough for the typical non-expert home user to do. If this is done with S-video and a good capture card, the quality loss is relatively minimal to the average home viewer.

  2. It sounds pretty cool, though I'm a bit skeptical that you get 6 pages of features for only $24.95

    EDIT: Oh, sorry, it's $24.99.

Or you could just use the video/audio output of your standalone DVD player to your DVR or your computer. But you would still need to capture or convert the composite video to digital. Still, this should upset the movie studios.

At least my Canopus ADVC 300 ignores MV (if you accidently hit two buttons together at power-on 8) ).

Well that's fairly easy to do too so I guess you could include some of the Canopus devices with the Hauupage. The new 110's to the best of my knowledge this doesn't work, I have one but keep forgetting to try it whn I pull it out. Haven't seen any flat out say they can do it with a 110 so my assumption is it doesn't work. There were some posts that it won't work on some the later 100's either.

As far as the linked software goes I'd suggest that it's false advertising IMO. A) The legality of making copies is debatable depending on which side of the fence your on. The basic line from Adam has been there's no provision so you can't make a copy. Makes sense to me. B) You still need a device that is going to ignore the macrovision signal which are few and far between.

From the literature this software package appears to be no different than something along the lines of Ulead Movie Factory...

New Canopus ADV110 - power up, hold down button for a long count of 10 - tada!
No more MV - Remember, a "long" count of 10.
The Squonk is of a very retiring disposition and due to its ugliness, weeps constantly. It is easy prey for hunters who simply follow a tear-stained trail. When cornered it will disolve itself into tears. True or False?
