  1. ReactOS: The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming (Maybe?)

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-14899507

ReactOS has been around for quite awhile . . . . Wonder if the Russkies will give it a boost?

I always like the Red Army, I'll donate one time in the amount of 5K Euro...after all I've been donating to many Warez sites in small amounts of 30 - 50 Euro each, it's always good to give.

This world is better off with alternatives to Windows and Google!

    Yeah, whatever.

    Pulling quotes from the article:
The system's developers say it runs all Windows programs, but is much faster than its Microsoft equivalent.
I've yet to see any proof of this.
In fact, it mostly just gives a BSOD faster than Windows does.

that is said to be fully compatible with all Windows-based applications, programs and services.
About as "compatible" as any emulator is. PearPC as a Mac, for example.

The developers added that ReactOS was much faster, too - if on a standard PC Windows takes about a minute to load, ReactOS will only take about 10 seconds.
I will never understand why people think boot time is a measurement for anything.
How fast does a computer need to turn on? If you are that impatient, you need a prescription for Xanax.

If there was sufficient funding, it would take about a year for the project to make it to the real world, said Mr Rechitsky.
Right. I've read "almost done" for most of the past decade.

    .......

I've watched SkyOS and ReactOS from the beginning, along with several others. I've always enjoyed tinkering with alternative OS, but they're all crap. I remember playing around with alternate Linux kernels in the 1990s, and those were mostly junk, too -- all of which have finally died off.

As most developers know, it's much easier to create a new OS, as opposed to trying to reverse engineer one (and not copy anything, so as to avoid stepping on patents, trademarks and copyrights). The reason Windows is spaghetti code is because it has to be so backwards compatible. The Russians are about 15 years behind MS, from all the code I've seen. It's closer to a buggy Windows 95 or NT4 than anything else.

This is just pro-Russian political saber rattling, as far as I'm concerned. At best, maybe they're hoping some company is dumb enough to buy out the software and code. (Maybe even a desperate attempt for some of the programmers to find jobs in the field? I've seen that, too.)

    Just my 2 cents.

    Nice overall response lordsmurf.

However, the sentence about bootup speed made me laugh out loud.

I think there was a poll about bootup speed just recently. Evidently some people care.

Laptop/Netbook users care about boot speed. Also poor skilled gamers that reboot to escape their folly.

Based on what I know about gamers, that just reinforces the idea for needing Xanax.
Those are some seriously wound tight people.
