Just saw some new Memorex dvd labels designed specifically for dvds at Best Buy. Kind of expensive.... 20 for 14.99. Has anyone tried these? I actually use printable dvd-r's, but would like to label my dvd+r dl's since I have not seen any printable ones except for Ritek which I refuse to buy due to cost and poor quality. Thanks.

The general opinion around here, from bitter experience in most cases, and commonsense in the rest, is that labels are bad news doe DVDs. They throw off the balance of the disc, causing playback stutter, and often bubble and warp, causing discs to get caught in the tray.

Printables are a much better idea, or if you are less self concious about your handwriting, a good old sharpie.

These are labels made specifically for dvds. The package says it is made of some sort of plastic polymer. There is also text on the package saying that it is guaranteed to work on dvds.

Paper labels are susceptible to expansion and contraction with changes in temperature. DVD players produce more heat than a CD player does. Therefore, the change in temperature will cause a paper label to expand and contract, which in turn causes DVD playback errors. Memorex has created a special polyester film material that is guaranteed safe for DVDs and reduces playback errors.

That is from the Memorex website. Maybe I'm cynical, but to me this reads :

Paper labels cause playback errors. We have invented a plastic label that causes less playback errors than paper labels do.

    Just fills me with confidence.

In fact, if you wanted to, you could read this line

Memorex has created a special polyester film material that is guaranteed safe for DVDs and reduces playback errors

    and this one

    Prevents playback errors
as saying that they gurantee that these labels will not adversly affect DVDs, and will in fact improve playback on crap discs by reducing or stopping playback errors.

I bet that's a claim they can't live up to.
