I couldn't believe that song won. Nothing like advancing stereotypes of African-American culture. There's a lot of backlash out there to the song and not from morality cops, either:

Otherwise, I thought the Oscars went well.

I don't want to state the obvious here, but Terence Howard is black. He plays a black pimp in "Hustle & Flow". Not only is he a black pimp, but he is also a would-be rapper writing lyrics about the things he knows. In other words - It's just a movie.

I thought it was kind of catchy. Of course, I could care less about what the lyrics said as most rap is just stereotyping a minority of a minority and ultimately giving a bad rap (no pun intended) to the majority of that minority (does that make sense). There is enough misunderstanding/ingnorance/intolerance without propegating minority stereotypes.

Actually, the author of that article seemed to be more miffed that Fifty Cent missed the Oscar nod and totally forgot that Fifty Cent's entire image is based on a minority stereotype.

Then again, sometimes a song is just a song.

Sometimes it's more. There has been an ongoing love-hate relationship between hiphop music and the African-American community in general. Outside of hiphop, is there currently any other musical form that glamorizes the lowest common denominator of human culture (violence, drugs, misogyny, etc.)? Since the overwhelming majority of hiphop artists are of one race, it tends to "reflect" on that race as a whole. Unfortunate and unfair, perhaps, but a fact of life. And when someone receives an award for it, it just tosses more salt into the cultural wound (and the chasm between those who like hiphop and those who hate it).

Thats like saying Country music reflects poorly on all Whites. While I detest the music, I dont feel it makes me look bad. Nor do I hear my professional Black friends/colleges complain the same. The ones that dont like rap just consider these rappers "clowns".

Not quite. Country music doesn't glamorize the negative aspects of a white cultural minority. Rap, on the other hand, glamorizes the negative aspects of a black cultural minority. Style is one thing. Content is another.

this is the only Country song I know

    You can tell the world
    you never was my girl,
    you can burn my clothes
    up when I am gone.
    You can tell your friends
just what a fool I've been,
    and laugh and joke
    about me on the phone

You can tell my arms :
    Go back into the farm!
    You can tell my feet
    to hit the floor.
    You can tell my lips
    to tell my fingertips,
    they won't be reaching out
    for you no more.

    But don't tell my heart,
    my achy breaky heart,

    I just don't think he'll understand.
But if you tell my heart,
    my achy breaky heart,
he might blow up and kill this man.

    You can tell your Ma,
    I moved to Arkansas,
    you can tell your dog
    to bite my leg.
    Or tell your brother Cliff,
whose fist can tell my lips,
he never really liked me anyway.

    Or tell your Aunt Louise,
    tell anything you please,
myself already knows I'm not O.K.
Or you can tell my eyes
to watch out for my mind,
    it might be walkin' out
    on me one day.

    [Chorus: 50 Cent & Olivia]
    [50 Cent]
I take you to the candy shop

I'll have you spending all you got
Keep going 'til you hit the spot (whoa)

    [Verse 1: 50 Cent]
You can have it your way, how do you want it
You gon' back that thing up or should i push up on it
Temperature rising, okay lets go to the next level
Dance floor jam packed, hot as a teakettle
I'll break it down for you now, baby it's simple
If you be a nympho, I'll be a nympho
In the hotel or in the back of the rental
On the beach or in the park, it's whatever you into
Got the magic stick, I'm the love doctor
Have your friends teasin you 'bout how sprung I gotcha
Wanna show me how you work it baby, no problem
Get on top then get to bouncing round like a low rider
I'm a seasoned vet when it come to this shit
After you work up a sweat you can play with the stick
I'm tryin to explain baby the best way I can
I melt in your mouth girl, not in your hands (ha ha)

    [Chorus]

    [Bridge: 50 Cent & Olivia]
Girl what we do (what we do)
And where we do (and where we do)
The things we do (things we do)
Are just between me and you (oh yeah)

    [Verse 2: 50 Cent]
Give it to me baby, nice and slow
Climb on top, ride like you in the rodeo
You ain't never heard a sound like this before
Cause I ain't never put it down like this
Soon as I come through the door she get to pullin on my zipper
It's like it's a race who can get undressed quicker
Isn't it ironic how erotic it is to watch em in thongs
Had me thinking 'bout that ass after I'm gone
I touch the right spot at the right time
Lights on or lights off, she like it from behind
So seductive, you should see the way she winds
Her hips in slow-mo on the floor when we grind
As Long as she ain't stoppin, homie I aint stoppin
Drippin wet with sweat man its on and popping
All my champagne campaign, bottle after bottle its on
And we gon' sip til every bubble in the bottle is gone

    [Chorus 2x]
    [Chorus: 50 Cent & Olivia]
    [50 Cent]
I take you to the candy shop
I'll let you lick the lollypop
Go 'head girl, don't you stop
Keep goin 'til you hit the spot (whoa)
