  1. Can anyone recommend a good tool for converting avi (divx or xvid) to the standard dvd (vob) format? I have tried one which gave a video which was in synch, but slightly more jittery in motion, so im wondering what anyone would recommend? thanks for any help

A serviceable (and free), no-frills multipurpose converter is Quick Media Converter. It has an "easy mode" for newbies, and an advanced mode for those who want to (and know how to) tweak parameters their own way.

Bringing into the discussion your other related post ( https://forum.videohelp.com/topic362562.html ), what are you actually trying to achieve ? A single VOB file is not ideal for playback, and there are better ways to convert to mpeg format if that is required.

You seem to be going about things in a needlessly complex way

  7. Thanks for the replies, Im creating a dvd with a menu for some family avi files from my camera, im using dvd flick to convert, then finally gui for dvd author to add my vob files to a menu. gui for dvd author can give my vob files i add to it chapters, before creating the final dvd for burning. I wondered how to convert them properly-i only have dvd flick as my conversion tool, which always converts single avi files into multiple files (vob/ifo/bup files), obviously this makes for burning straight off onto disc, but i do not want to do this, as i want to add my vobs to dvd author to use with a menu. This is why i needed to use a tool such as JoinVobFiles so i could add my vob videos to DVD Author.

After using DVD Flick to convert my avi files to vob, my new vob files play with very slight jitter, and still do so when converted or burnt to a final dvd, but i know of no other way. I think part of my problem is no doubt finding a better avi to vob converter, or using a program similar to DVD Flick, but one that lets me choose only to have the output as a single vob file? Im not sure if any of that will stop my slight motion jitter in the converted vob files, but i guess using better programs should be my starting point? Even without the menu and burning my dvd flick vob files straight off, the jitter is there, so I dont think it can ve dvd author or JoinVobFiles causing the problem, and must surely be related to dvd flick, when I skip using these two programs. Do i need a better tool than dvd flick to convert my files correctly to vob, but as single files?

I dont know if the problem is related to dvd flick or the very slight constant stop/start motion, but when i add my joined vob files using my 'joinvobfiles' tool to dvd author for using a menu, i get a "SCR moves backwards! SCR delta= -580.07 sec at ~50% of file" message. DVD Author seems to correct the problem and allow its use with a menu, as the final dvd it creates works fine (albeit with the every second very slight pause!).
browsing the forums, could this stutter (and the above SCR message) be down to the fact that when using DVD Flick, im converting from avi to vob PAL? should I instead use NTSC (which could be my camera?).. I still think that JoinVobFiles is probably not the best tool for joining though. thanks for any advice if possible?

  8. Ive heard if my original files are damaged with this SCR error as above, i may need to split the avi video into seperate video and audio files, and then rejoin? if this is correct what tools do people recommend which will not effect the quality? Ps some avi files i am trying to convert with dvd flick which end up having a slight stop/start motion lag are 23 fps. I tried converting to ntsc vob format instead of pal vob to see if it made a difference, but it did not encode more than halfway. If not then it must be linked to my error message above.
Does anyone know a small simple tool to convert a 23 fps avi to 25 fps avi, while still keeping audio in synch, or is it not worth the hassle? I thought at first i could just make my final dvd ntsc format, if that is 23 fps, in the hope that those who try and watch it have a multi region player, but ill need to find a tool along the lines of dvd flick that can do it without problems, is there anything out there just as good as flick?
